During his early years, James worked on the family farm and after graduating from 8th grade this was his full-time job. To follow his cousins, he lied about his age so he could join the army in 1949. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1951.
J.D. married his hometown sweetheart Hazel Branch on August 6, 1951, and moved to Chicago, Illinois. This union was blessed with five children.
James worked at U. S. Steel Mill for almost 40 years. Never one to be idle, after retiring he started a lawn service business. He enjoyed working and talking on his CB radio. He adopted the handle- “POG” Poor Old Green, and that became how his many friends and family members addressed him.
POG loved to cook, garden, and spend time with family. He also enjoyed sitting in his lawn chair in his garage talking with his friends. One of his favorite responses was “most likely, but not hardly”. He was an avid sports fan (Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls). He also played baseball in his youth and joined a softball league when he moved to Chicago. He enjoyed an active social life and helped to form a club called the “WINO’S” with some of his softball friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Mildred, Henry, Dorothy Mae, Melban, and Frank Jr.
James transitioned to his heavenly reward on September 4, 2023.
His life will be remembered and celebrated by his wife Hazel; children, Mark (Pamela), Maurice (Eula), Carl (Mary), Valerie (Vince), and Yolanda; grandchildren, great grandchildren; brother Reverend Freddie Green and sister Bobbie Jean Green with a host of nieces and nephews a his special friend and fellow softball player and “WINO” Jerry Griffin. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.blakelamboaklawn.com for the Green family.
