Hattie Mae Ross was born May 23, 1936 in Carlton, Georgia to Charlie Hall & Annie Mae Cunningham-Hall which preceded her in death. She was the eldest of three children, she peacefully transitioned to her final resting place at the age of 87 years. She resided in the city of Chicago and God called her home on September 3, 2023. She was affectionately known as “Momma Ross”, as she was a mother to many.
Hattie’s motherhood role began at the age of 10 when her mother passed away, she was a mother to her sister Charlene and her brother Maurice. They came to Chicago, IL where they were adopted by Agnes Lipsey. She always looked after her siblings no matter what and made sure they stayed together. Hattie attended and Lucy flowers high School. Hattie met Donald her soulmate in 1954, the love of her life, they were married in May 1955, to this union eight children were born. She was a kind nurturing person that never judged anyone. She was a strong, woman that never wavered from her beliefs and supported all her children in everything they did. Hattie was fortunate to be able to be a homemaker who put her children first. Although she never became the teacher she aspired to be, she still was able to teach, guide and mentor everyone that came in contact with her. She volunteered as a cheerleader mom and wrestling mom while her children attended grammar school. She was the PTA president and achieved many accolades for her services. Hattie instilled in her children, morals, values, and manners Mrs. Ross was known was known to give tough love and treated everyone the same. She always had time to give an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on advice to all that knew her.
Hattie loved her family and always gave them the best! Hattie and Donald had four girls and four boys which she cherished. They would take family vacations across the US and have family Bar B Ques. Hattie loved to have a good time and celebrate with her family. She loved to play Bingo and go to the Casino where she enjoyed to play slot machines for relaxation with the Golden Girls of La Salle Street. Hattie spent a lot of time with her children, she stressed education and provided a stable and loving home. She was very proud of all her children’s accomplishments. Hattie and Donald were blessed with 66 years of marriage and was still in love. She touched and inspired so many lives and all life lessons she taught are still remembered by all.
Hattie was preceded in death by her husband Donald; sister Charlene Clark; brother Maurice Hall Sr: grandson Brian and great grandson Amir.
Hattie leaves to cherish; Her eight children, Valerie, Tina (Sulay), Donald Jr, Edward, Darrell, Yolanda, Eric and Erika; grandchildren, Brandi, Eric Jr., Khai, Darrell Jr, Elijah and Michael; one brother-in-law Glen Ross; sister-in-law’s Charlie Mae Ross and Jackie Ross; special nephews Maurice Hall Jr and Howard Clark and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
