Barbara Elizabeth Vogel

Barbara Elizabeth (Moulden) Vogel, a homemaker and foster parent to nearly three dozen children, has died at 83 at her Perry Hall area home. She was married for 63 wonderful years to the love of her life, Edward Weigand Vogel, Sr., who survives her along with three children, Marian Jean Weimer (Bill), Edward Weigand Vogel, Jr. (Melanie), and Tracy Elizabeth Lane (Doug), foster son Raymond Vernon McCue, and eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

An alumna of Eastern High School in Baltimore, she worked in the 1950s for the Glenn L. Martin Company and, later, at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville (Ala.) where her husband was stationed during his U.S. Army service. The couple also resided in Germany for a year before returning to Baltimore and settling in the Belair/Edison community. They relocated to Perry Hall in 1990.

From 1973-1984, Mrs. Vogel and her husband served as foster parents for the Baltimore County Department of Social Services, fostering some 30 children, most in emergency shelter situations. Four of the children remained with the Vogel family for a longer time, becoming a permanent part of the family and being regarded as the couple’s own children.

Author, speaker, and talk show host Bob Paff remarked, “She came into my life at age 10 as my own family was falling apart. By 16, I knew I had to make a drastic change or I was headed down the wrong path. She and Ed provided the love, strength, and direction I needed at a critical point in my life. I lived with this wonderful family until I went off to college.” Douglass Graham, 32-year owner of a 7-Eleven franchise in Parkville, resided with the Vogels for four years and noted, “Ms. Barb opened her home to me at a young age and showed me how a family could love and grow as a unit. I have carried this with me throughout my life while raising my own family. She cared for me as if I was one of her own.” Raymond McCue, a customer service representative for Southern Green USA, a Jacksonville, Fl., lawn, and pest control firm, joined the Vogel family at age 10, said, “I was so honored to be called her son."

Mrs. Vogel was a communicant at Faith Lutheran Church and Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church in northeast Baltimore. During her younger years, she enjoyed bowling, camping and spending as much time as possible at the family’s summer cottage in Bedford, PA entertaining family and friends. Her greatest pleasure in life was being with her beloved growing family, as well as, spending as much time as possible with her dear friends.

She is also survived by sisters-in-law Marie and Marion Moulden, brother-in-law Albert Vogel, Sr., many nieces and nephews, and her cherished cousins. Mrs. Vogel was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Walter Moulden, Sr. and Marion Jean Moulden (Zepp); her brothers Henry Walter Moulden, Jr. and Charles Carroll Moulden; and a grandson, William Edward Weimer.

Viewing will be held at the Schimunek Funeral Home, 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham, MD, on Tuesday, February 9th 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on February 10th at 10am; and due to Covid-19 restrictions the service will be by invitation only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Maryland chapters of the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer's Association.
