After leaving high school in 10th grade, Angelina worked in the Apex Hosiery Factory to help her family through the great depression years. Her job was to hand-shape the nylon stockings (she had the smoothest hands)!
Angelina met Baltimorian Benardo Amedoro when he came to Philadelphia to work for Cuneo Press. Ben signed up for a two-year stint in the Army Selective Service, with the intention of marrying Angelina when he returned home. Two years turned into 5 years as World War II broke out. During that time, Angelina continued to work at the hosiery factory and sold war bonds to support the war effort. Ben was honorably discharged from the Army in July 1945, and married Angelina in September of that year, living just around the corner from Angelina’s parents and siblings. In October of 1946, they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Bernadette.
In 1950, the Amedoro’s moved to Maryland to be near Ben’s family, and settled in Northeast Baltimore, where they were parishioners of The Shrine of the Little Flower Church. In 1969, they relocated to Rosedale Maryland and worshiped at St. Clement Mary Hofbauer Church. Angelina was a stay-at-home Mom, while Ben worked at The Baltimore News American until his death in 1981. Angelina was known for her pizzelles – tasty, flaky, waffle-like cookies which she painstakingly made for family and friends several times a year. Angelina enjoyed frequent “outings” with her daughter to grocery stores, Wal-Mart and The Dollar Store. Angelina continued to live in Rosedale until the age of 94. It was then that she was diagnosed with Aortic Stenosis, and underwent TAVR surgery to implant an artificial heart valve. After a successful operation, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law in Nottingham.
Over the years, Angelina (better known as “Miss Angie”) became the go-to person whenever anyone needed prayers for sick family members and friends. She had true devotion to the Blessed Mother and Infant of Prague – daily praying for the needs of those on her ever-growing “prayer list”. Angelina spent her later years enjoying re-runs of her favorite shows – Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Columbo. She also took great joy in her meals – eagerly awaiting breakfast, lunch and dinner – and always having a small glass of red wine with dinner. Let’s not forget dessert! Hot Milk Cake was on the top of her list. Kit Kat bars, chocolate covered marshmallows and A&W Root Beer were her in-between treats!
Although she will be greatly missed, we are comforted in knowing that Ben is now taking good care of her.
