Alice Arnett Andrews, age 93, of Roslindale, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2022. The daughter of Dr. John Hancock and Katherine McCollin Arnett, Alice was born on May 22, 1929. She grew up in Philadelphia where she attended Germantown Friends School, graduating in the class of 1947. Alice earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Vassar College in 1951.
After finishing her undergraduate studies, she moved to Boston. There, Alice worked as a social worker, helping to find families for children placed for adoption. In the early 1960’s, she married William Andrews and moved to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where she resided for more than 20 years. Alice returned to higher studies as an adult and was awarded a Master of Arts in 1982 from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She moved back to Boston in the 1980’s and worked at Copley Place and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.
She was a longtime member of Old South Church, also in Boston, and greatly enjoyed singing in its choir. Known for her dry sense of humor and quick wit, Alice spent her last decade living at Hebrew Senior Life, in Boston. Alice is survived by her two sons, Timothy Andrews of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Matthew Andrews of Neuilly Plaisance, France. Her older brother, Edward Arnett, of Durham, North Carolina, had recently passed away.
A Celebration of Life for Alice will be held on Sunday, September 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Boston's Old South Church, 645 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02116.
Services will be held through Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St., Norwood, MA 02062.
