Michael G. Miles

Mike was born in Sidney on December 22, 1952 the son of Gordon and Elma (Hartwell) Miles. He attended school in Mt. Upton, Catskill, and Sidney and graduated from Mt. Upton Central School with the Class of 1971. He furthered his studies at Delhi College. Soon after, Mike entered the United States Air Force serving his country from 1972 until his honorable discharge in 1973 at which point he entered the Air National Guard until his discharge in 1979. On August 31, 1974 he married Barbara Hart.

Over the years Mike worked as a truck mechanic and driver for several area firms beginning with Hills, Wadhams and Charles Husteds. After traveling the 48 states, as an owner-operator, logging with Bob Harris and Fred Zachow, maintenance for R&L Log Homes and Valley Nursery Mike was employed by Howard's Express as a driver for several years. Due to health issues he returned to college, earned his Associates Degree and was hired by the NY State Division of Homeland Security where he worked in the office of Fire Prevention and Control. Mike was very proud to serve on the Material Review Committees for Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbooks for the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA).

Mike was also involved with his community serving on the Guilford Town Board, Borden Hose Co. (Mt. Upton Rockdale F.D.), Chenango Fire Chiefs Association, and Mt. Upton American Legion. He was a member of the Rockdale Rod and Gun Club, Sidney Boat Club, Guilford Historical Society, and Mt. Upton United Methodist Church. In his leisure time he enjoyed barbequing, building with wood, bowling, softball, hunting, boating, fishing, taking an occasional cruise with Barb, RVing, and his beloved dog, Buddy.

Mike is survived by his wife Barbara of Guilford, his daughters Heather (Jeremy) Pain of Mt. Upton, Gretchen (Kenneth Jr.) Hubbard of Whitehall, PA and his 2 grandchildren Madeline and Noah Pain. Also surviving are his brothers Monte (Ruth) Miles of Kennedy, NY, Martin (Sharon) Miles of Guilford, Max (Marcy) Miles of Jamestown, Mark (Rita) Miles of Mt. Upton and Gordon Miles of Houston, TX and his ½ sister Michelle Miles of Athens, NY, Stepmother Judy Miles of Scottsdale, AZ, Aunt Mary Clark, Uncle Jr. Hartwell, several nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Friends and family may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich on Friday from 5-7 PM. A funeral service for Mike will be held on Saturday, September 7, at 11 AM at the Mt. Upton United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mt. Upton
