Ella Ruth Nelson, of South New Berlin, NY passed away February 8th, 2024, at Wilson Hospital after a brief illness. Ella was born June 15, 1955 in Sussex, New Jersey, the daughter of William Warren Crane and Henrietta Ellen Thornton.
Growing up in Sussex and Newton, NJ, Ella graduated from Newton High School. There, Ella met and married her first husband William Charles Laing in 1971 in Newton, NJ who she met on the Newton First Aid squad and who preceded her in death, May 25, 2015 in Stroudsburg, PA.
From there Bill and Ella moved about with the Navy, living in Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA, Jacksonville, NC and Jacksonville, Fl. before settling back in NJ. There Ella was a manager at the Burger King in Newton and also in Hackettstown, NJ. Their marriage ended and Ella then married Chris Nelson in 1989 in Hackettstown, NJ at the Burger King where she was the manager of the store and again this marriage ended and she settled back to South New Berlin to be with her family. Ella was well known for her scrapbooking and her great picnic salads.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Harry and David; her sisters, Mary, Cynthia (Cookie) and Leona; her husband, William Charles Laing; her aunts, Catherine Gould, Ruth Breen, June Reyes, Margaret Hill, Eleanor Scudder, Susanna Green and Marion Babcock; her uncles; Kenneth Thornton and Charles Crane.
She is survived by her sons, Timothy Michael Laing and his wife Patricia Jane Yee, and William Charles Laing and his wife Kristy Lee Franco; her second husband, Chris Nelson, of Missouri; her brother, William Crane and his wife Melanie; her uncle, Terry Thornton; her grandchildren, Alicia and Emilee Laing; her step grandchildren, Alexis and Ethan; her nephews, Bobby Johnson, David Crane, Matthew Crane, Scott Crane, and Harry Crane Jr.; her nieces, Erica Crane, Cindy Dubois, Jessica Crane and Tami Natoli; as well as several great nephews and nieces all from New York and New Jersey.
A funeral service for Ella, will take place at 7:30 pm on Friday, February 16, 2024, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich with Rev. Steve White officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 pm until the time of service. Burial will take place privately at a later date.
