Dan was born at the family farm in Preston, NY on April 2, 1929 the only child of Timothy and Anzelma (Kalicicki) Downey and was a 1948 graduate of the Oxford Academy High School. Following his graduation he continued to work on the family farm which he operated for about 50 years which was a true love and passion of his.
On October 20, 1956 he married Alice Crandall who passed away October 4, 1986 and together they raised 4 children. On September 24, 1987 he married Laura Roach who passed away in May of 2016.
Dan wore many hats during his lifetime other than being a “farmer”. He served as Preston Town Justice for six years and Preston Town Assessor for two years. He served as Preston Town Supervisor from 1966-1978 and again from 1980-1987. Dan was also a founding member of the Preston Fire Dept. which was formed in 1957 of which he was the first Fire Chief. He was also former President and Vice President of the Fireman’s Association of Chenango County. He was active in the fire dept. until 1980 but remained a lifetime member. Dan had also driven school bus for the Oxford School district from 1988-2004.
Even though he wore many hats, Dan always made time for his family and above all else was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was an honest, selfless and loving man always hard working from sun up to sun down. A man of few words but his actions spoke volumes.
Dan is survived by his children; Cheryl Clarke of Binghamton, NY, Colleen Downey of Oxford, NY and Michael Downey also of Oxford, his step-children; Roxanna (Terry) Harvey of East McDonough, Colleen Roach of Syracuse, Murray Roach of Norwich, George (Susan) Roach of McDonough, William (Tina) Roach of Earlville, Regan (Colleen) Roach of Pulaski and Barrett (Leah) Roach of Oxford. Also surviving are his 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his brother-in-law John (Peggy) Carhart and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his wife Alice and wife Laura, Dan was also predeceased by a daughter Theresa.
A graveside service for Dan will be held on Thursday, May 31, at 11:00 am from St. Paul’s Cemetery. The Rev. Ralph A. Bove will officiate.
