Bozrah – On May 7, 2022 Mary A. Kornacki of Bozrah, formally of Preston, passed away peacefully at her home two months shy of 100 years of age. She was born in Norwich on July 9, 1922 to the late Peter and Mary (Wojtkiewicz) Andruskiewicz. Mary graduated from NFA in 1940 and was employed at Thermos until her marriage.
She married Vincent “Bill” Kornacki in September 1949. He predeceased her in 1990. They raised two children who survive her, Mary Jane Kornacki [married to Jack Silversin] of Cambridge, Massachusetts and John Kornacki of Norwich. She leaves a sister Helen Drag and a brother Stanley Andruskiewicz, both of Norwich, as well as three generations of nieces and nephews.
Kindness and compassion were second nature to Mary, giving much to many. For years, she enjoyed volunteering at and taking part in activities at the Preston Senior Center. A committed and devout member of St Catherine of Siena parish, Mary was an active member of the Ladies Guild.
A highlight in Mary’s late life was volunteering in the escort office at Backus hospital where she was widely known for her can-do spirt and signature butterfly hair clips. She “retired” at age 95 after 17 years of service with the top honor of most accumulated hours.
Mary loved adventure and international travel. Israel, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, France, Poland, and the Netherlands are some of the countries she explored. A favorite vacation spot closer to home was Rockport, Massachusetts where she took great pleasure in watching the early morning sun rise out of the ocean.
Mary was generous with hugs and affection. Her kindness was a blessing to many and she will be deeply missed.
Family and friends are invited to visit Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich on Wednesday from 9:00 until 11 AM. Visiting hours will be followed by a funeral home service. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Boswell Ave., Norwich. A memorial mass will be held 10:30 AM July 9th at St Catherine’s church in Preston.
