Jo was born in Norwich, CT on April 5th,1928 to Rocco and Vincenza (Culotta) Fazio. She grew up as one of six children in a close-knit family and neighborhood, and she often shared memories of what it was like growing up in Norwich during the 1930’s and 40’s. She was very proud of her Italian heritage, and in 2000 she visited Tusa in Sicily, the village from where her parents emigrated. After graduating from NFA, she worked as a secretary at the Thermos in Norwich.
She met her husband Harold at Gardner Lake in the spring of 1953, and they married 6 months later on November 28th. They had 5 children who all got to see what a devoted and loving marriage looked like. Jo showed her love with lots of hugs, laughs, family stories, parties at their home in Taftville and wonderful cooking. She had deep faith and lived her life following the Golden Rule. She loved days at the beach, golf with friends, Friday night bowling, exercising at the Y and Curves, quality time with friends and family, parties at the house, summers in Provincetown, and travels around the country and to Europe with family.
She slowed down in the last few years, but before that she was ALWAYS ready to go out and do something. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but they will be comforted by the many wonderful memories and stories they all share.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband Harold, dear son Michael, her “happy heart” great-grandson Andrew Slyter, her sister Francis Buckley, and brothers Joseph Fazio and Mario Fazio. Jo is survived by her daughter-in-law Christine Aberg of Woodbury, CT, son John Aberg and his wife Marta of Lisbon, CT, daughter Kathy Aberg of Norwich, CT, daughter Carolyn Aberg and her life partner David Nichols of Bath, ME, and son David Aberg and his husband Kevin Fiddner of Redwood City, CA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her sister Antoinette Demicco and her brother Rocco Fazio.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they all loved to be with GG. When thinking of Jo, we remember that she was always grateful for her life, and we could all learn from and follow her lead on how to live life to the fullest. She would also want you to know, “You are very special and we are lucky to have you!”
We want to thank the staff at Colonial Health and Rehab in Plainfield. They treated Mom like family, and she was happy there. A service at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Norwich, CT will take place on September 10th at 9:30, followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery, then by a Celebration of Life at the Holiday Inn in Norwich. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice in Jo’s memory.
