Elmer Floyd Roberts, age 86, of Coker, died Nov. 24, 2012, at Tuscaloosa VA Hospice. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Coker Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bro. Jimmy Channell and Bro. Greg Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Coker Cemetery with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Violet; his parents, John and Rosie Roberts; five brothers; three sisters; and his grandson, Justin Roberts.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Walker (Tommy); his sons, Alan Roberts (Deborah) and Randy Roberts (Bobbie); his brother, Joe Roberts (Frankie); and his grandchildren, Brad Walker, Carson Walker, Cortney Roberts, Kelly Bond (Scott), Jennifer Taylor, John Roberts, Eric Frazier, Dustin Kennedy, and Mitchell Kennedy (Kaylee).
Elmer graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School and Perry Business School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a medical assistant while stationed in El Paso, Texas. He was a truck farmer in Tuscaloosa since 1962, a member of the Tuscaloosa Truck Growers Association where he served as vice president for many years, a Market Manager for the Tuscaloosa Farmers Market for many years, was selected 1995 Tuscaloosa County Farmer of the Year, served on the board for Alfa Insurance, and was actively involved with the Farmers Coop and many other organizations serving to promote farming in the area.
He was a lifelong member of Coker Cumberland Presbyterian Church and an avid reader. He especially enjoyed western novels by Louis L'Amour.
Pallbearers will be Carson Walker, Randy Kelly, Tim Roberts, Robert Roberts, Michael Roberts, and Larry Roberts.
Honorary pallbearers are friends and neighbors of the Coker community.
