She attended Etteca Grammar School then Gorgas High School. In December 1946, she married her sweetheart, Theodore Oliver Oswalt, who had just returned from serving in the Army Air Corp. They lived in Northport until 1959 when they built their dream home halfway between Northport and their birth community of Samantha. Our mother spent the early years of her marriage taking care of their three children. She volunteered in their schools, drove them to baseball, cheerleading, piano and band practice in between the business of homemaking, making her yard glow with the beauty of flowers, feeding the family from the productivity of the garden, making clothes and leading the MYF teen church group along with Clara Willingham. When all of her children were out on their own, she got her first paying job at Park Manor Nursing Home. She remained there for about 18 years, taking time to visit the children out of town. All of her life she loved reading and often took her children to the Northport branch of the Tuscaloosa County Public Library. Her children remain grateful for this introduction to reading. She taught herself to play the piano by ear in her teens, fell off a bull in her younger years and broke her leg but few things kept her down.
She was predeceased by her husband Oliver, to whom she was married for almost 77 years, by 4 days. Also predeceasing her were her parents, her sisters Reba T. Gilliam (Lynwood) and Eunice T. Lunceford (Hugh Jack), her brothers W.C. Tierce (Grace) and John Doyle Tierce (Margaret), and her sons-in-law James “Tommy” Storey and W. Pelham Blackburn.
She is survived by her three children Scarlett Storey, Anthony Oswalt (Bo), and Jennifer Blackburn; three granddaughters, Rebecca McKenzie (Jim), Kristina Fanning (Jimbo) and Lorna M. Secondi (Jason). She was blessed with great-grandchildren James McKenzie III, Andrew McKenzie, Will Fanning, Eliza Murtland and Cadi Secondi, and nieces and nephews.
