Barney J. Mitchell

He was preceded in death by his parents Barney Silas and Zady Pearl Channell Mitchell, and his sister Phyllis Mitchell Whobrey.

He is survived by his brother Phillip Mitchell of the Philippines.

Visitation will be held at Sunset Brown-Service Funeral Home, 3802 Watermelon Rd. on Monday, February 22, from 11:00-11:50 am. A graveside service will follow at 12:00pm.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 6, 1948, Barney lived a life devoted to loving his country and others. He served his country in the US Navy and then as a Naval reservist. As a member of the American Legion Post 123 Honor Guard, he participated in many funerals making sure veterans were given the proper recognition for their service. He attended Northport Baptist Church for the majority of his life where he was actively involved in the Singles Ministry and the Men’s Ministry helping in house construction and repairs. His greatest accomplishments were being “Uncle Joe” to his family and someone who could be counted upon to help his friends and make a difference in his community whenever possible. He had a servant’s heart.
