We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Slavko Nikic.
Born on May 7, 1946, in the quaint village of Mezgraja near Ugljevik, Republic of Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slavko's life was a journey of resilience and love. His father, whom he was named after, tragically passed away just months before his birth, leaving him to be raised by his mother, Stajka, who died in early 1963.
At 16, Slavko began working as a stable-boy for Milan Todic, a prosperous landowner in Dvorovi who would come to treat him like a son. By the fall of 1964, Slavko had moved to Vratnik, Sarajevo, starting a new chapter as a plumber and joining the team at “Integral” where he dedicated 27 years of service.
An avid athlete, Slavko cherished physical activity, from playing soccer for SC “Vratnik” to engaging in boxing, badminton and tennis. He was an accomplished chess player and his love for math made him a formidable card player as well.
Slavko's life took a romantic turn in early 1971 when he met his future wife, Ivanka, in Novi Pazar, Serbia. Following a long distance relationship, Ivanka relocated to Sarajevo, leading to their marriage and the births of their children, Gordana and Goran. Despite the turmoil of the Bosnian War in 1992, Slavko's devotion to his family never wavered, enduring the challenges that came their way (too many to list!) with courage and hope.
In 2001, following their children, Slavko and Ivanka moved to North Vancouver, a place he often praised for its natural beauty. A staunch advocate for environmental conservation, Slavko embraced a lifestyle of walking, public transit, and rigorous recycling. Known for his meticulous nature and spirited debates, he was a man of principle, valuing cleanliness and advocating against indoor shoe-wearing.
Above all, Slavko was a family man, driven by a desire to see his children lead lives filled with happiness and health. His teachings on kindness and compassion remain his lasting legacy, deeply cherished by his grandchildren Aleksandar, Tomislav, Mila, and Stefan, who adored him greatly.
Slavko's absence leaves a void in the hearts of many who knew and loved him. In memory of Slavko, donations can be made to the St. Sava Church or Heart & Stroke Foundation to honor his life and contributions.
