April 26, 1927 - December 28, 2021
Our dear Roger passed peacefully at North Shore Hospice after 94 wonderful years. Survived by his wife, Kay, his daughter, Evelyn; and his step sons, Andrew and Erik Lockhart and their wives, Dalia and Kim. Predeceased by his son, Roger, Jr. He will be mourned by his grandchildren Charlie, Lara, Carolina, Tallie, Mia and Sophie.
Roger was born in Bronxville, N.Y., and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. He had a wealth of life experiences beginning as a child growing up in the depression and then going on to obtain his mechanical engineering degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology and, after serving in the U.S. Navy, earned his MBA from Harvard University.
He began his forest industry career with Weyerhauser and subsequently worked for Stora Kopparberg Corp.; Southwest Forest Industries and MacMilllan Bloedel. At MB he worked in newsprint, pulp and paper, product development and became Senior V.P. of sales and marketing. Roger’s career took him all over the world and he was regularly invited to speak on emerging developments in specialty papers, the future of wood, and team management. He was known for bringing his vision, creative energy and good humour to the job.
Personally, Roger led a very active lifestyle enjoying golf, fishing, tennis, squash, racquetball, skiing, and mountain biking. He shared his joy in these activities and we all found it easy to join in with his enthusiasm.
In particular, he loved being on the water and caught fish in a tuna boat off the coast of Maine, on a kayak at Ambleside, in waders up the Dean River, and on a windsurfer off Hornby Island. Hornby and its people were very special to Roger.
Roger also had a passion for reading and learning. He loved to share his knowledge on subjects as diverse as international politics, responsible logging practices, the proper weight shift in a golf swing, and the history of the world.
Roger skied into his 90s and loved catching early powder snow with family and friends. He would guide us on where to find the fresh snow. There will always be a way down the Whistler Bowl in the trees that is Roger’s Run.
The family will wait until a time we can all gather to celebrate Roger’s life. Condolensces and memories can be shared at www.firstmemorialnorthvancouver.com
