Richard Lorne Piper, passed away with family by his side on Saturday, May 21, 2022, in North Vancouver, BC, at the age of 74. He passed away quite suddenly after contracting COVID-19 and had lived in long-term care for the last three years due to various progressive illnesses.
Richard was born in North Bay, ON in 1947, and spent most of his life in Vancouver, before moving to North Vancouver 12 years ago.
Richard was predeceased by his mother, Barbara Alice Piper (Brown) in 2001.
Richard, or “Dick” as he was fondly known to family, close friends, and colleagues, worked for the Intermodal Branch of Canadian National Railway in Surrey B.C for 31 years, first as a truck driver and later, as a heavy equipment operator, until his retirement in 2008.
Richard had a kind and gentle disposition and was always non-judgemental and non-confrontational. He was a devoted family man. He had a passion for nature and admired flora and fauna.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen, of 47 years, and his loving sons: Ryan and Darren. He also leaves behind his siblings from the Piper family: Ruth, Carole, George (Doris), Reta (Angelo), and Ian.
Richard recently discovered his birth father, Reginald Ward (deceased). He leaves behind the Ward siblings: Judy, Barb (David), Daphne (Eddy), Carol, Reg (Janet), Monty (Carol), Debbie (Walter), Keith (Elaine), Perry, Gail, Wayne (Michelle); Deceased: Patsy and Cindy.
He was an uncle and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Richard will be fondly remembered and missed by all who loved him.
Maureen, Ryan, and Darren extend special thanks to the staff at Evergreen House and Creekstone Care Centre, for their exceptional care for Richard.
There will be a funeral service at First Memorial Funeral Services & Boal Chapel in North Vancouver on June 11th at 1:30 p.m. for family and close friends.
