John Thomas Laidlaw Shiell was born to John and Kathleen Shiell (Dorran) on January 19, 1947. His Dad, a farmer from Chirnside, Scotland, and his mother from County Sligo, Ireland, met through their love of Christ’s gospel. John’s Dad died when John was only 4 years old. His mother raised him while running a farm and caring for those who needed a place to live while ill or end of life. His upbringing had a life-lasting impact on his faith and kindness to others.
John also met his wife, Donna, when he was 16 at a Christian Convention in Milford, New Hampshire in 1963. They married in 1971, spending the next 9 years in Scotland where their two sons, Kevin and Stuart were born. After leaving the farm, they decided to emigrate and landed in Carleton County, New Brunswick on June 5, 1980. They settled on Bedell Settlement Rd. for the next 39 years.
John worked as a farmer, welder, and care aide during his working years. John faced many health challenges in his life and finally, in December 2020, they moved to North Vancouver, BC to be close to their son. John was pleased with the move: close to the ocean, no snow for mom to deal with, and a new audience for his many stories and facts. The next four years were good days intermingled with increasingly complicated health. John adapted to each obstacle learning each time to be content and enjoy the many friends he made.
John was unconditional in his love for his family, particularly his grandchildren. But generally, he showed interest and kindness to everyone he met; served with a side of humour and a story. However, he was serious and unyielding in his love for the gospel story and wife of 53 years. Despite his health challenges, his concern for Donna’s well-being was foremost.
John made friends quickly. He considered the staff at VGH Hemodialysis and Evergreen 2 South, his family. No one was excluded. A special thank you goes to the Hemodialysis unit at VGH (his 2nd home), Evergreen House, and VGH 11D, who provided excellent care in his final days.
John is survived by his wife Donna, Kevin (Lisa), Stuart (Rosanne), and grandchildren, Linnea, Callum (Victoria), Graeme (Chloe), Aydin, and Gemma
