What would I do if I have another day with Jack?

We would walk somewhere to have coffee together. On the way to the cafe, we may see a young skateboarder go past. We would then unanimously conclude that  skateboarding should be banned on the road. Over coffee, we will talk about writing a paper together. Jack would then try to convince me that the paper should be about wtp-wta gap. 

Big hug Patricia. I had a wonderful time with you and Jack in Vancouver. It brings tears when I look back at the time we spent together, but also smiles.

I was teaching behavioral economics in Chengdu, China, early July.
It reminded me much of Jack, my great friend, who also taught frequently in far-away countries. We even taught courses together. How much I miss him now.
Patricia, this kind of feeling must be a hundred times more intense for you. I wish you all the strength needed to deal with it.

I met Jack just once, but we corresponded on a research project over several years. I would like to add my voice to those who knew him as a kind, insightful (and extremely sharp) researcher.  Our interaction was brief, but the impressions are long-lasting. My condolences on your loss.

We knew Jack as a dear friend rather than as a professional, although he was good enough to share many of his fascinating behavioural research findings with us.  Mostly, we just enjoyed his good company and conversation, and had lots of fun with him and Patricia over about 35 years of coffees, dinners, holiday feasts, biking around Vancouver, visits in  Arizona, trips to Europe (hiking in southwest France, bicycling in Burgundy, down the Danube, and around Lake Constance). They were excellent travelling companions. Jack will be sorely missed.


Jack and I met over ten years ago at NTU in Singapore. He was always so kind to me with his time and his more than generous words. He was more than a mentor; he was a dear friend. I’m very sad that I didn’t get to see Jack again since he last visited me in Warwick a few years ago. I hope to see him again someday…

- prof. Jack Knetsch never failed to bring excellent research findings and valuable insights to our IAREP (the International Association for Research in Economic Psychology)  conferences - we were lucky to have him at several of them, including when he was the keynote speaker!

- he'll be  always remembered as a main reference in our field!

Jack inspired me to be a better economist and a better person. He was exciting to be around, never a dull conversation, so many meaningful conversations. Jack was deeply insightful about economics and about life.  He had principles and lived by them. I will miss him.



Our deepest and sincerest condolences go to Patricia and the Knetsch family. 
I met Jack first in 1978 when he was on a brief visit to the University of New England (Australia). In just under an hour, Jack gave me some insights to transform my PhD thesis from a mundane quantitative analysis to one that was meaningfully policy relevant. Jack has been my mentor since then and both Jack and Patricia have been special family friends. Jack has contributed to my classes at Macquarie University and NUS. He made a lasting impression. He enabled me to take my sabbaticals at SFU in 1984 and again in 1989 - these were memorable experiences for my family and me. Between 1994 and 1998, I had the unique opportunity to be his co-lecturer in workshops (organized by the University of Sydney) on the subject of Environmental Valuation. Jack’s talent and skill to deal with difficult audiences and patiently convey content was a learning experience for me. He strongly supported my move to NUS and I remain forever grateful for this. I had the opportunity to meet him frequently because of his close collaboration with Euston Quah and his regular visits to Singapore. Jack has made real and meaningful contributions to Behavioural Economics and has mentored many economists across the world. I will describe Jack with 3 Gs: Graceful, Gracious and Generous. I first met Jack in 1998 as a psychology student in The Netherlands. He spent some time in Rotterdam and I shared my thoughts with him about my upcoming PhD project. In 2002 Jack was a member of my PhD committee and the day before my defense we ate 'appelgebak'  (appel pie) in Rotterdam. He was perfectly able to say it in Dutch. In the last decade I have been lucky to visit Jack and Patricia in Vancouver. For the first time in 2011, then in 2018 and very recently last May 2022. In those years Jack and Patricia drove us around, showing us Whister and Vancouver. Not used to driving long distances I asked Jack: " Are we not staying over in Whistler?" Jack laughed, understanding that I was not used to travel more than 2 hours by car in The Netherlands. During our visits we usually ended up on their deck having fine dinners, drinks and enjoying each other's company.  Dear Jack and Patricia, I am glad that we met quite a few times. You two are my Canadian friends and it's really so sad that Jack is not with us anymore. I will remember him as a very nice friend who loved, among other, his 'Dutch cumin cheese.' Glad we brought you some recently. Dear all, wish you all strength. 

It was at a SABE conference at Rensselaerville, NY, USA, in 1993 that I met Jack for the first time, and discovered he had roots in the Netherlands, which is my home country. He was interested in visiting Erasmus University at Rotterdam. This was the start of a series of PhD courses that we ran together over the years, first in Rotterdam and later at Wageningen University. He taught me how to conduct classroom experiments, which was great fun, both for us and for the students. His visits were very well appreciated by both universities. During these courses, Jack showed how economic journals have changed their appreciation of behavioral economics by the reviews he received of his submissions. Despite some literature criticizing endowment experiments, Jack always believed that in natural environments, and little opportunity for learning, the endowment effect was for real and should be considered.
Jack liked to travel, so it happened that I once emailed him from Bangkok during holidays in Thailand and got a reply…, from Bangkok! So, we had a wonderful dinner there together with my partner Manon.
We also visited Jack and Patricia in their home a couple of times. Jack always had some economic issues to discuss, so we exchanged a lot of ideas. Our visits were, of course, accompanied by excellent dinners and drinks, and talks on more mundane matters.
Jack attended the IAREP-SABE conference that we organized at Wageningen in 2016, and my farewell ceremony as a professor of Economics of Consumers and Households at the same time. I felt honored and grateful of his presence at this event.
We recently visited Jack and Patricia. It was like experiencing the old times, with dinners and drinks, and good talks, only a little bit affected by the lingering corona pandemic.
I am grateful of my longstanding friendship with Jack and will cherish the memories of my good friend. I also wish Patricia strength and faith in a future without Jack.


Dear Jack, you were a great economist but an even better friend and mentor. I was so happy when you visited Singapore - which I like to think is one of your many homes away from home. You enjoyed our food and culture so much, like our laksa and Peranakan food. But most of all you helped us be better economists and people through your advice and our many discussions. This photo captures a happy memory of you having your favourite morning coffee. After which we’d discuss the many issues of the day! I hope that there’s coffee where we meet again. There must be good coffee in the places that good people go to, right? Love you and miss you, Jack. 

You joined us at the National Day parade in Singapore in 2019. You watched the planes with childlike awe, in your favourite pondering finger at chin position. You should have seen it all, at your age. But you remain curious and amazed whenever something interesting shows up. And because you is kind, you always share  your latest interesting discovery with the people around you. I’m grateful to have shared so many of these moments with you.

You are one person I am most grateful to have met in my life Jack. Losing you is one of the hardest things to go through. My only comfort is we will  meet again. 

Deepest thanks and appreciation for your impactful contributions, wise guidance and unwavering support all these years.

Forever missed, never forgotten

Jack was my academic mentor and university teacher. He was a great teacher and researcher who, often in his career challenged the conventional  ideas of the day. His well known work with Nobel Laureates, Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler on the endowment effect, loss aversion, fairness, and much more in Behavioral Economics anchored his academic reputation. But many may have forgotten his earlier but equally influential works in environmental economics such as in the classic book, Economics of Outdoor Recreation with Marion Clawson, the Hotelling-Clawson-Knetsch Travel Cost Method, Property Rights and Compensation, Legal Rules and Pollution, and Valuing Non-market Goods were all great works. Jack was a regular participant in our Singapore Economic Review Conference Series since 2005, and was at one time, the Lim Chong Yah Professor at the National University of Singapore, a Nanyang Professor at the Nanyang Technological University, and a regular Visiting Professor at the Singapore Civil Service College. Not many would know too that he was advisor to settling the river pollution issues in Malaysia, and was on the cost-benefit analysis team for building the first Penang bridge many years ago. It was his encouragement to me that I pursued later my career in Cost-Benefit Analysis and it was Jack who brought me to know the eminent economist in the subject,  Professor E. J. Mishan. Jack's often heard phrase to students, ' In the hope that we continue to question and to learn' will always be in my mind for all time. I shall miss him dearly.
