Enid Joyce Niessen (Johannson) passed away peacefully in the afternoon of September 18,2024 while living at Agecare Harmony Court in Burnaby, B.C.
She was born in Leslie, Saskatchewan to Marjorie and Johann Johansson on May 20, 1932. As a young woman she worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator in New Westminster. She met her husband, Lindsay Niessen at a dance in Surrey where her parents lived. They were married in New Westminster on August 10, 1951.
Soon after, they moved to Williams Lake, Quesnel and later to Wells which is a small town near Barkerville, B.C., where LIndsay got a job as a Forest Ranger with the B.C. Forest Service. When they first arrived in Quesnel, they lived near Dragon Lake but eventually they bought a house in Abbot Heights next to her parents. In spite of the frequent moves and many little shacks or old homes she had to live in, Joyce always made the best of it and never complained. Lindsay eventually got a job as a Log Scaler in Vancouver, so they packed up and moved again.
Her first two children, Donna and Dave were born in Quesnel and later, two more children, Karen and Jim were born in Vancouver. They lived a happy and productive life in Vancouver and later retired in Surrey, B.C. After losing her husband in 2006, Joyce started going to the Riverboat Casino in New Westminster where she made many friends and won enough money to go on a few trips and buy things for her house. She would often ride home on the Skytrain with these winnings in her purse. She was a trusting soul. After having a seizure and a few strokes, Joyce required more care and spent her last days in the care home.
Joyce's warmth and love for her family will be missed. She truly made the world a better place. The celebration of life will be a private affair with family only on November 16,2024.
