July 12, 1940-February 1, 2024
David passed away on Thursday in the early morning hours, peacefully, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He had spent the last four years of his life in the care of the magnificent staff at St Jude’s Care Home in Vancouver.
David, son of Grant and Rena Patterson of Carleton Place Ontario, joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of seventeen, and served on Canada’s last aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure. In 1965, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and was posted to “E” Division, serving in various detachments in the Vancouver area. He retired in 1991. David was known in his RCMP service for leading from the front, mentoring new members, and fearlessly confronting violent criminals wherever he found them.
After retirement, David stayed active representing the interests of RCMP members, including involvement with the Oppal Commission. He also advocated to save Richmond’s trees from development, and rubbed shoulders with the stars as a movie extra!
David is survived by his wife Diane, a fellow native of Carleton Place, and his sons Grant and Brian, his stepson Steven, daughter-in-law Diana and step-daughter-in-law Christine, granddaughters Ana Paula and Gisele, and step-grandson Tommy Lee. He is pre-deceased by his first wife Diana, and his stepson Michael.
A memorial service will be held at Crescent Beach Legion, 2643- 128th Ave. Surrey, B.C. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11:30 am.
Please contact Grant Patterson to RSVP or for enquiries. All friends and colleagues welcome.
