Writer, editor, educator, sportsman, marksman, outdoorsman, soldier and proud family man, father of three, Richard E. Truesdell, of North Palm Beach, Florida, and earlier of Brooklyn and Garden City, New York, passed away in his 81st year on Sept. 8, 2011. Born Sept. 14, l929 in Middletown, New York, to Wesley Edwin and Anna Gippert Truesdell, he grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. attending P.S. 241 and Brooklyn Technical High School. In 1952, he then received a BS degree in Industrial Arts from the State University of New York at Oswego.
Mr. Truesdell enlisted in the United States Army when 18 and was attached
to B Co., 3rd Bn, Spcl Trng Unit in the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C. He later served with the 384th and 67th AAA Gun Battalions at Fort Bliss, TX.
He began a 34-year professional career in public relations as a copywriter with Union Carbide. Later, joining Hill & Knowlton, Inc., he rose from creative writer to Vice President and Group Supervisor. His copious feature articles, news stories, textbooks, etc served his clients and target audiences well. Beyond writing this “jack-of-all-trades” was highly skilled in advertising, exhibits, direct mail, speech writing, film scripting and literature.
For 25 years, from age 15, Mr. Truesdell grew his passion and skill as a marksman entering numerous local, state and regional competitions. His most memorable rifle match occurred when he fired a then record-setting score of 400 of 400 – a perfect score!
During his life he devoted his time to various organizations such as the Roslyn Rifle & Revolver Club, N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Assoc, NRA, Moose Lodge # 2010, B.P.O.E. Lodge # 2469, Royal British Legion, Catholic Church, and 82nd Airborne Division Association.
Earlier in life, Mr. Truesdell enjoyed golfing, playing duplicate bridge, fishing for smallmouth bass and backpacking or hunting in the Adirondack or Catskill Mountains.
At his passing, Mr. Truesdell was a communicant at St. Clare Catholic Church in
North Palm Beach, FL. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Ryan Truesdell, formerly of
Johnstown, New York, and their three sons, two daughters-in-law, and three grand-children: Thomas of West Palm Beach, FL; Tyler, wife Erin and daughters, Leann and Taylor of Rockville Centre, N.Y. and Peter, wife Tracey and son Ryan of Fort Myers, FL.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clare’s Church on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. followed by internment at South Florida VA Cemetery at 1:15 P.M..
