Evelyn Baber

Evelyn Badcock Baber, 94, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL., died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Evelyn was called Evelyn Marie and Auntie Mame by family, and many of her friends called her Ev, Evie, and even Tiger Ev. She was a great mother, extremely active in her community and loved and lived life to the fullest.

Her interests included tennis (which she played competitively until she was 72 years old, to the amazement of many), bridge, ping pong, walking, travel, dancing, volunteer work; and she loved her social life with her friends.

She graduated from Mulberry High School as Salutatorian of her class. After high school, she graduated from Florida State University (an all girls school at the time) where she joined the Kappa Delta Sorority. For one of her college years, she attended George Washington University, where she met James (Jim) Clyde Baber, Jr. and the two of them began a whirlwind romance.

Shortly after graduating from Florida State University, she married,Jim Baber in a large, outdoor wedding in 1948, at the home of her parents in Mulberry, FL. The couple moved to Washington, D.C. shortly thereafter. While in D.C., Evelyn began working tirelessly for the Hoover Commission, where she received accolades for her job performance. She stopped working after the birth of her first child. In 1951, Evelyn and Jim moved to West Palm Beach. While there, she joined the Junior League of the Palm Beaches and the Tropada Club. She and her husband made countless donations to various charities, including donating the Baber Cottage to the McConnell YMCA Outdoor Center. Evelyn also donated yearly to her alma mater, Florida State University, and served on the Board of Directors for several years. She also gave to Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach and served as a presidential counselor for a period of time.

Evelyn and Jim attended Holy Trinity Church in West Palm Beach where she taught Sunday school for many years. In later years, she volunteered at the church for a program called “Time and Talent”, an outlet for retired people.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Wogan Stanhope Badcock and Evelyn Clark Badcock; her sister Maida Badcock Pou; her brother Wogan Stanhope Badcock, Jr.; her husband James (Jim) Clyde Baber, Jr.; and her son James (Jimmy) Clyde Baber, III.

Evelyn is survived by three of her children, Sharon Baber Turner, Jan Baber Parasmo, and John Wogan Baber; her grandchildren, Chad, Clark, Chase, Bryce, Shana, Jarrod, Lauren, Ashley and Stephanie; her great grandchildren, Chase, Christian, Mikayla, Vivienne, Justin, Evelyn, Claire, Elise, Ava, Leonardo, Kolton, Kyla, Breana, Katelynn, Olivia, and Reese

Evelyn's compassion for others was amazing. Over the years, she took so many people under her wing, treating them as if they were family. Her love for God and her love for people from all walks of life was immeasurable. She will be truly missed by so many.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 18th at the Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 11 am-12 pm, with a reception to follow.
