Edwin Henderson was born on November 18, 1937, the youngest of eleven children born to Mr. Herman Henderson, Sr., and Mrs. Lily Thomas Henderson in Nicholls, Georgia. He received his education in the Douglas County Public School System. After completing high school, Edwin joined the military and served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959.
After his tour of duty, Edwin made his home in Leesburg, Florida. He later moved to Miami, Florida, in 1961.
Edwin was married to Mary Alice Brown in 1963, and to this union, one son was born, Edwin Bernard Henderson, in 1966. He began working for the United States Postal Service in 1965, where he retired after 30 years of service.
Edwin and Mary joined Zion Baptist Church and then later joined Bible Baptist Church, where they were loyal and faithful members. Edwin served as a deacon, overseer of the senior saints ministry, and regularly visited the elderly in nursing homes, which was his passion.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He gave much of himself to others who were in greatest need. He was a beacon of kindness and strength, and his impact on those around him will be remembered for a lifetime.
On March 7, 2024, Edwin answered the call of our Heavenly Father while residing at Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans' Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Edwin was preceded in death by his father, Herman Henderson Sr.; his mother, Lily Henderson; and ten siblings: Hattie Mae, Rosa Lee, Homer, Leola, Marion, Herman Jr., John, Carrie, Frankie, and Ruby Jean.
Edwin leaves to cherish his memories his wife Mary Henderson; his son Edwin Bernard Henderson (Angela); three grandchildren: Raphael Simmons, Krisanna Bailey, and Justin Daley; two sister-in-laws: Carolyn Brown and Vivian Henderson; and a cadre of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
