Bipinchandra Shah was born on July 19,1941 and sadly passed at the age of 80 on May 31, 2022 in his apartment on Williams Island in Aventura, Florida. Bipin is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Karna and sons Anil and Sam, and daughter-in-law, Elaine, and grandchildren Sydney, Will and Tesla.
Bipin was born in Zanzibar, a small island off the coast of east Africa. As a youngster he loved playing field hockey, playing cricket, and riding his bike in the streets. At the age of 18, well before cell phones or computers, Bipin left his parents, Kaka and Ba, and his 4 siblings, Sheila, Rashmi, Gauta and Dhiren, to search for a higher education and create a better life in England.
Once Bipin arrived in London, he shared an apartment with 5 other students from India and Pakistan. His father sent him a monthly allowance of £40, £20 of which he used per month on rent. At the time he was a vegetarian, had never had alcohol, and had never smoked. That all changed in London during the 60’s. While studying and taking the CPA Correspondence Course in London, he also had a job as a clerk at an accounting firm to help pay for his student bills.
Bipin was a witty, charming, and handsome young man who always had a bright smile on his face, and always carried a comb for his hair in his back pocket. In the mid 1960’s, he met his stunning Danish wife, Karna, who had also recently left her family and siblings behind in Denmark in search for a better life. Bipin and Karna went on to marry in London in August 1966. At the time, he had to get the blessing from his father, as was the first of his generation to not have an arranged marriage.
After Bipin got his CPA degree, he worked at Coopers Brothers Corporation in London (later to become Coopers Lybrand). Bipin and Karna then moved to Zambia in 1968, where he worked as the Chief Chartered Accountant at Indeco Corp (a Zambian government run company). While in Zambia, the family was able to make numerous visits to Dar-es-Salam, Tanzania, where Bipin’s parents were living. In 1971, Bipin joined ITM Group (a large international conglomerate) and soon after brought the family back to London. In 1977, he then took an opportunity at ITM to work in New York as the Chief Accountant at RST Resources Corp. In 1994, Bipin helped found Global Minerals and Metals Corporation (GMMC).
The family lived in New Rochelle, NY from 1977 to 1990. This is where the family ping pong rivalry began. This is also where Bipin and Karna hosted many parties, playing music from the Bee Gees to Rod Stewart. In 1990, Bipin and Karna moved into Manhattan and also had a home in the Hamptons, where they continued to host many good times with family and friends. In 2009, Bipin and Karna moved to Williams Island in Florida to retire.
Bipin was a great man who had an extraordinary woman by his side. He lived a full life, traveling the world and turning the American dream into reality. Bipin’s time on earth has now passed, but his mark was made. His spirit will live on through all of us that are blessed to have known him.
