John Jerry Jones, 72, of Jacksonville, Arkansas passed away on September 25, 2022 in is home. John was born in Middlesex, North Carolina; the son of Courtney Lewis and Mamie (Wiggins) Jones. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. in 1969. John married his wife Julia (Miller) Jones on February 18, 1975.
John joined the United States Air Force on 18 June 1969 and had a decorated 25+ year career. He retired from Little Rock Air Force Base Arkansas, as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) on 31 July 1994. During his 25 years of service, his assignments included Eglin AFB FL; Minot AFB ND, 2 tours in Korea; Andrews AFB MD; McDill AFB FL; Spangdahlem AB Germany; Barksdale AFB La; Worthsmith AFB Michigan; Torrejon AB Spain; Offut AFB Ne; and Little Rock AFB Ar.
After his retirement from the Air Force he continued to pursue his education earning Associates Degree from Pikes Peak Community College in General Studies; Bachelors of Science Degree from Park College in Criminal Justice Administration; Law Enforcement; and Master of Arts Degree from Webster University in Human Resources Development. John worked numerous jobs upon his retirement, he worked for the Post Office for 1 day before realizing it wasn’t for him; Little Rock AFB Medical Group Records Section; Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) from 1995 to 2001, before moving on to work with Homeland Security, where he retired in 2012.
John was a simple and caring man that loved his family and was a great provider. He was always there for his family if they needed help or advice. He loved sports, and in his younger days was a talented baseball player, playing in Armed Forces leagues in Germany, and even had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates during High School. John loved coaching as well, especially basketball where he coached both youth and adult basketball leagues, he also loved to barbeque and was always eager to grill when family came over. He was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
John leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Julia Jones of Jacksonville, Arkansas, two sons Courtney Jones of Lees Summit, Missouri and Chris Jones of Euless, Texas, three grandchildren Jaquae’, Marcel, and Jenascia “Lala” Jones of Lees Summit, Missouri, two brothers Arthur and Charles Jones, and a sister Lillian Dudley, as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers James, Robert, William “Tom”, and David Jones, and his sister Lilly Dunston.
Visitation will be held the morning of October 7, 2022 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills, with funeral services beginning at 10:30 am; officiated by Matthew Miller. Burial will follow at Arkansas State Veteran’s Cemetery in North Little Rock, Arkansas at 12:00pm with full military honors.
