She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School Bronx, New York 1939
She married Herman Lipschitz at City Hall on September 7, 1943. To be sure it stuck, and to stop their parents from kvetching, a rabbi married them again in a religious ceremony, on September 14, 1943. They celebrated both dates as their anniversary.
Parenthetically, the rabbi was the chaplain from Sing Sing Prison. He was known as “have chuppah, will travel”, and this likely predestined their son to a career in criminal law.
On October 1, 1945, in an act of extreme charity to their offspring, they changed their names to Hal and Marjory Berne.
Marge’s first child was Susan, born on April 17, 1947. She passed away in August, 1976.
Marge’s second child was Richard, born on May 12, 1952. He is still alive and kicking.
In 1986, Hal and Marge moved from Cedarhurst, NY, to Tamarac Fl, so that Hal could play golf. Marge hated the sun, but she loved Hal more.
Hal passed away on January 9, 1994, and she counted the days until she would lay beside him for all eternity.
Her beloved grandchildren and great grandchild have so many memories of her. Each has provided a fond one:
Matt remembers trying to jump from the couch in Cedarhurst over the coffee table and not quite making it, resulting in a beautiful shiner;
Rebecca remembers bringing Chinese food to share, and watching Grandma’s favorite movie, Hobson’s Choice;
Jacob remembers coming to visit, and being welcomed by Grandma’s famous split pea soup and vegetable cutlets.
Naomi remembers the candy jar that always awaited her at Grandma’s house.
Marge and Hal were like two peas in a pod, and now they are reunited.
