Proud Army veteran, Barry Dewayne Pennington of Summerville, SC went home to be with his heavenly father on February 2, 2023 at the age of 75. He was surrounded with love by his family. He was born in Cazy, WV, on April 23, 1947. He grew up hunting and adventuring in the mountains of the Bald Knob area.
He enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school where he proudly served for 23 years. He was an electrician in the coal mines for 35 years where he also served on the mine rescue team. He went on to earn a degree in mining engineering. Above all things he accomplished, his shining example as a devout Christian was a true testimony to the life he lived.
In 1987 he married the love of his life, Rita, and they spent 35 beautiful years together. They had the kind of love people wait their whole life to find and never get to experience. In addition to being her faithful companion he was truly proud of being called Papaw. No words can describe how much being a Papaw meant to him and the love he had for his grandchildren. He made a profound impact on the life of their children and grandchildren and molded them into better human beings. His grandkids adored him and his sense of humor constantly entertained them.
Barry’s servant’s heart and humble existence touched everyone he encountered. Those that knew him loved him. He truly loved life and those sharing it with him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita; children, Renae (David) Jarrell of Travelers Rest, SC, Laura (JJ) Ferrell of Summerville, SC Lora McDavid, Barry Pennington II;
grandchildren Jesse, Darian, Lauren, Grayson and Luke; brother Paul and sister Becky (Dennis) Cave.
Preceded in death by his mother Opal, his father Marlin, sister Pam; and his grandson Levi Peterson.
A special thank you to nurse Adam and nurse Theresa for their efforts to bring him peace and comfort.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life on February 7, 2023 which will be held at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home located at 7113 Rivers Avenue North Charleston, SC. Visitation begins at 1pm immediately followed by a memorial service at 2pm.
