Bacele “Cele” Infinger passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at her home in Charleston, SC, where she had been lovingly cared for by her children. She was 98 years of age.
Bacele Virginia Lee was born in the family home on February 7, 1925, in Florence County, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James O. Lee and Catherine Hall Lee (Granny). She grew up in the Coward area and graduated from J. C. Lynch High School in 1943. That same year, she moved to Charleston from Florence County to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during World War II where she met Walter Wendell Infinger. They married on December 10, 1950 and raised four children at their home in North Charleston. They were lifelong members of Asbury Memorial Methodist Church, which later became Asbury St. James United Methodist Church in Charleston.
Cele retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard on March 31, 1987 and pursued many hobbies including gardening, stained glass, crabbing (or anything outdoors), and travel where she would often bring home rocks or sand to add to her collection. But her passion was golf. Over the decades Cele golfed as often as she could, won many tournaments, inspired other players, and was featured in a 2015 Post and Courier newspaper article “Still golfing at 90” highlighting her play in that year's Ladies City Amateur Tournament at Charleston Municipal Golf Course. She and Walter, her husband of more than 70 years, enjoyed playing courses all over the world but especially loved Hawaii and the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. Walter passed away in October of 2021 at the age of 99.
She is survived by her children, Kenneth Ross (Kim) of Issaquah, WA, Susan Kay Shoemaker (Chuck), Patricia (Tricia) Infinger, and Eric Lee (Janet) all of Charleston, SC. She was adored by her six grandchildren Lydia Visvader (Otto), Brian, Andrew (Yulia), Emily, Adam (Sydney) and Julie. She had one great grandson, Carter George, and two step-great-grandchildren, Tanner and Kailyn Visvader. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Jackie Infinger and many nieces and nephews.
Cele is predeceased by two brothers, Samuel Marion Lee and James Henry “Jimmy” Lee, and four sisters Cecile, Myrtle, Mary and Doris.
A visitation will be held Monday, June 12, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home in North Charleston. A funeral service at Asbury St. James United Methodist Church will occur Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 10:30 AM, followed by internment at Carolina Memorial Park.
