John Dyer, 94, passed away Feb. 13, 2012 in a local hospital surrounded by family. He was a loving husband, faithful father, beloved grandfather/great grandfather and cherished friend to many. Above all, he was a Christian and a good and faithful steward of the blessings God bestowed upon him.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant. His civil service career was with the U.S. Postal Service in Norfolk until his retirement as a Superintendent. He also worked at Avec Electronics and subsequently volunteered driving cancer patients with Lee's Friends. He worked out daily at the Norfolk YMCA, where he had many close friends and held the longest active membership. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of the Pythians. He was a member of Parkway Christian Center, and a faithful participant of the Adult Sunday School group.
Survivors include son John L. Dyer and wife Xandra; daughter Karen Allen; son James E. Dyer and wife Beth; sisters Josephine Cruz and Rose Counter; and brother Robert Dyer; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Dorothy E. Dyer; parents John and Juanita; sisters Virginia Dyer, Mary Dyer, and Julie Santasierre; and brother Ralph Dyer.
A funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. at Parkway Christian Center (601 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake). Officiating will be Rev. E. L. Trueblood and Rev. Robbie Jones. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service, and the internment will be at Rosewood Memorial Park at 2 pm. Smith and Williams Funeral Home are handling arrangements.
