James P. Johnson Sr. passed away Wednesday January 17th, 2018. He was a lifelong resident of Norfolk VA. He graduated from Maury High School and attended William and Mary extended. He served during the Korean War. He was a Mason and member of Atlantic Lodge #2, A.F. & A.M. He coached Little League Baseball at Blue Bird Park. He worked for Watters and Martin Wholesale Hardware for 42 years. After retirement he volunteered many hours at Sentara River Pavilion. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years, where he served as elder.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his loving wife Gwen. They were married for 61 years. He was also preceded in death by his son, James Phillip Johnson Jr. Phillip held a very special place in his heart. In addition, he was preceded in death by his sister Marion, known affectionately by family as Mern.
He is survived by his daughter Ellen J. Cutchins and her husband Tom and his grandchildren Christine, Andrew and Emily Johnson. He is survived by his sister Rose Watts, affectionately known as Bill, his sister in law Betsy Christmas, his daughter in law Julie Johnson, and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Johnson had a close relationship with his nephew Steve Watts and his wife Donna. Mr. Johnson’s daughter expresses her love for their care and concern for both her parents always, but especially over the last several years.
There have been numerous people throughout Mr. Johnson’s life who brought him inspiration, assistance, a guiding hand, a smile. Whatever big or small kindness you showed him, know he appreciated it and in turn so does his family. God’s Peace, Ellen
