Charles Elsman Mahone, 86, was called home by the Lord on February 20, 2021. Born in Richmond, VA on January 10, 1935, Charlie was the fifth and youngest child to the late Clifford Dewey and Annie Mary Mahone. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Dolores Nicasio, brother William, and sisters Mary Roberson and Margaret Courtney.
Joining the U.S. Navy at age 17, Charlie traveled the world before reaching his final port in 1967 at Norfolk. He retired in 1973 as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 after 22 years of service. He later worked at NARF on the NAS Norfolk Naval Base as an Ordinance Technician Specialist, and was a Founding Member of the G.O.B. Club. Upon retirement in 1989, he lived on a farm in Cartersville, VA with his wife Dolores. Together, they restored a 100-year old farm house.
Charlie enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and hunting with family and friends. Another passion of his was to have a large garden, to which he shared the bounty with family and neighbors. Charlie was a graduate member of the Norfolk Citizen Police Academy as well as a member of the Norfolk Master Gardeners Association.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister Ethel Minson, daughters Linda and Joe O'Hop, Laura and Dov Troup, sons Mark, and Scott and Kathy Mahone, grandchildren Stephanie and Shawn Parker, Christopher and Sarah Troup, Kelly Troup and Adam Emerson, and three great grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan and Natalie Parker, as well as many cousins in Richmond.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022 1:00p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Arrangements are handled by Woodlawn Funeral Homes of Norfolk.
