On August 9, 2022, Charles was called home. Charles Brandon was born on September 13, 1943 in Wake County, North Carolina to the late Ervin Brandon, Sr., and Thelma Jones Brandon.
He was educated in the Wake County School System and graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC with a degree in Physical Education.
Charles began his teaching and coaching career in 1965 at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA. Shortly after, Charles left teaching to play football for the Winnipeg Bluebombers in Manitoba, Canada. He then spent three seasons in the Continental Football League playing for the semi-pro Norfolk Neptunes, in Norfolk VA. Eventually, Charles left for Canada, again, to play for the Ottawa Rough Riders for 7 years in Ottawa, Ontario. He was a member of the feared "Capital Punishment" defensive unit. He won 2 Grey Cups and earned the title of Grey Cup MVP in 1973.
After football, in 1978, Charles returned to teaching and coaching at Maury High School and Norview High School, to name a few. Charles retired from teaching in the Norfolk Public School system in 2005.
Charles is survived by his daughter Lori Brandon of Waukegan, IL; and son Scott Brandon of Virginia Beach, VA. Two brothers, Wesley (Portia) Brandon of Fuquay Varina NC, and Rickey Brandon of Fuquay Varina, NC. Two nephews: Wesley Brandon (Edrienne) of Palo Alto, California, and Ervin Brandon, Ill of Washington, DC: great niece, Taj Brandon; great nephew, Sage Brandon, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial celebration of life for Charles will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, Virginia 23502.
