East Lyme - John S. MacLeod, 61, passed away on June 1, 2016. Born to Mary W. and Dr. John Kenneth MacLeod in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 31, 1954, John was a devoted and humble servant, with a laugh remembered by all.
John married Elizabeth (Betsy) Devany on July 16, 1994. They shared a love of traveling, jazz music, and backyard wildlife watching, while their greatest joy stemmed from time spent with family.
Though John graduated with an oceanography degree, the bulk of his career was spent at Pfizer Pharmaceutical in Groton, where he provided analytical support, always with a smile and a cheerful attitude.
John was a longtime parishioner of St. James Church in New London, CT, volunteering in a number of roles at the church. For 27 years he was an active member and a director for the Scotland CT Highland Festival Association, as well as the New England Region V.P. for the Clan MacLeod Society USA until diagnosed with ALS in Dec. 2015. He was a member of the Mohegan Pequot Model Railroad club and shared his love of trains with his grandson. For years he picked up and delivered bread for the New London Area Food Pantry. In addition to embracing his Scottish heritage, John was honored to be a Free Mason as it was the ultimate outlet for serving others.
John is survived by wife Betsy Devany MacLeod; his mother, Mrs. Mary MacLeod; brother, Bruce MacLeod; sister, Anne Jennifer MacLeod; daughters Stephanie and Sarah; his beloved grandchildren, Ava and Landon; a nephew and four nieces, as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, all of whom he deeply loved.
A memorial service will be held on July 3, 2016, at St. James Church in New London, CT at 2 PM. To read more about John's journey, go to Brave MacLeod Fights ALS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The ALS Association CT Chapter, 4 Oxford Rd, Unit E-4, Milford, CT 06460, in memory of John MacLeod.
