Sheri was born in Chicago, IL, August 22, 1936. She was adopted by Lewis and Faye Cohen. Lewis was a shoe store owner and Faye was a homemaker. The family moved to California in 1938 for a warmer climate and for the betterment of Lewis’ health. Sheri was raised in a traditional Jewish home and was educated in the ways of Judaism. They lived in West L.A. and attended the Wilshire Synagogue/Temple led by Rabbi Magnum of the I.G Magnum Store family. She was a good student, obtaining close to an “A” average at University High School. Her first love was always acting and she was awarded a full scholarship to the “Pasadena Playhouse”. Because of a family disagreement, she didn’t attend acting school, but entered UCLA to further her education.
It was at UCLA she met and married Ira Taneman, an ROTC Air Force Intelligence Officer. They were shipped to Wiesbaden, Germany, for two years. Their daughter Linda was born in Germany. Two other children were born (boys) after the return to the U.S.A. The marriage finally ended in 1961. Sheri went on to marry Duane McCallum in 1963. They had one child, Gordon, who is an LA City Firefighter. All of her children are now successful in business and community service employment.
Sheri is survived by her husband Duane McCallum; daughter Linda Ekstut; sons Gordon McCallum(Teresa), David Taneman (JoCee), and Steven Taneman (Deidre); 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
