Roel - Thanks for being such a great advisor, counselor and friend throughout all the years.  Words can’t possibly express how humbled I am to have had the opportunity to meet and get to know you.  I really enjoyed spending time sharing silly stories, examining our fears and aspirations, and having deep conversations about the things that mattered most to us in life . . . all so that we could walk away from it with a smile on our face. Thanks for being my closest confidant at the federal court in Downtown Los Angeles.  I will really miss our lunch dialogues and hanging out at work conferences.  It was always really fun, relaxing and enjoyable.  I will never forget it.  I will also really miss the moments that gave us the chance to decompress and inspire each other when we hung out away from all the bustle. I will forever cherish all the experiences that we had together.  Nothing will be forgotten.  Here’s to our next lunchtime chat in the afterlife my friend. Bostrek will be missed dearly. I will never forget those days and nights spent outside the streets and our lugaw adventures. He is my daughter Kayla's Godfather and though far away, he never forgets. I appreciate and treasure the times he spends with me and my family whenever we visit Cali, no matter how far he lives away, we'll meet halfway. Rest in peace Bostrek. 

We have known Roel since elementary. A good and cheerful fellow, indeed a Kumbento-raised brethren. You are in our thoughts and prayers bro Roel. We will miss you and your jolly voice in our hang outs here in the US. We will cherish those wonderful times together and you’ll be forever in our hearts.

Bostrek as we fondly call him back home. He was always serious, snobby and very reserved. We joked and call him “anak araw” along with Rei because of their “mestizo” like skin lol… Early 90’s summer were the best as we “tambay” in the streets of Sumilang. We used to hang out from the bakery to the wall of Lola Binday’s house and just chat the night away. Summer of ‘96  is when they moved to the US but it also paved the way for a strong friendship and never lost touch since. He went back to Manila in 2001 and we all went to Boracay. We dared to ride the banana boat and when the manong signaled it’ll be rough, Roel and I were happily thrown out to the water, leaving the others clinging tightly on the side of the boat lol

He has a unique way of showing his love(I know you don’t like being cheezy) and concern. When I moved to NY, he would always reach out and check on me and even visited us. In 2004, Roel and Mae toured us around LA and let us crash into their home. We had another reunion in 2018 in Simi Valley, thanks to my cousins and Titas for bringing us all together. It was short but definitely sweet. 

There’s always text messages from him that the family is well and a reminder how I’m older than him lol… He may not be in FB or any social media but he’ll send pics of his baby girl growing. He’s a proud father to Bella.

In 1996, Roel and Lee Mae got married. They were young but committed, dedicated to their responsibilities.  Roel was quiet, jolly, open-minded; a simple man but he had his own moods (Ha ha!). Years passed, I asked him when will I have a grandchild. He replied that they were not ready.  "We will, Ma, one day..." Then, years after, they took me out and Roel told me "your daughter" has something to tell you.  She gave me a picture, an ultrasound-- I did not know what that was. I couldn't even discern or figure it out.  It took so long for me to guess that Roel couldn't take it anymore and said, Mae is pregnant; you're going to be a grandmother. I cried. Isabella was born on Labor Day. And Roel? He was excited and proud to be a father. Roel made sure that his girls are very happy. When Isabella started school, both made sure that they'd live near her school. They moved a total of 4 times. When his birthday was coming up this year, I asked him what he wanted me to cook for him. He said, "Pochero" because he had not had it in a while. When Roel celebrated his 46th birthday at his brother's house, he was cracking jokes, playing Mahjong with his mom, Ate Girlie, and Tita Baby. He was happy and it was a memorable day. Two days later, Isabella graduated High School, where the whole family attended. Four honor awards and a scholarship... we could see in his face that he was very proud. After the ceremony, we walked onto the field, and while Isabella and Lee were taking pictures, he talked to us. I remember him saying, "Please, Ma." Days after, this horrible thing happens... I still can't believe it.  I'll always hear Roel's voice that day, and so I made a promise. From my heart, Roel, I thank you for being a good man, a great husband to my daughter, a great father to my granddaughter. Isabella will always remember you-- your laughter, advice, honesty, respect, humility and quality of life. Thank you for being my son. You will always be missed. Rest in peace... love you.

My deepest condolence!  Roel was a great friend and co-worker.  We worked together on the same department for a few years and worked on many projects together.  He was hard worker, smart and easy to work with.  Parati kaming masaya pag magkasama, naglolokohan and always trying to come up how to make everyone’s life easier at work.  You could always count on Roel because he’s very competent on what he does and an expert as well.  Ma mi-miss ka namin pogi! 

In your time of grief, i wish to express my deepest sympathies for the loss you are experiencing. Have a peaceful rest in eternity Kuya Roel. 

When I joined the CM/ECF Group, he showed me most of what I know now. He was my go-to person to resolve issues in many areas. We went to lunch together many times. He would call me Charlie and I called him Roelito. I will miss him a lot; my Lotto business partner. To his dear family, words cannot express the sorrow and sadness I feel for your lost. My condolences and prayers are with you.

My thoughts and my prayers are with Roel and with his family.  I write this note with tears in my eyes and know that it is my honor to have met and to have worked with Roel.  He will always be a beloved member of my court family.  

Roel, was the kindness person. He always help when I needed it. He was always very friendly. 

He is missed already.

Ever since our grandmother passed away it has been our family tradition celebrating in Redondo Beach. We feel the connection being by the water and it's fluidity.

First and foremost, my condolences to the entire Reyes family.  My thoughts and prayers are with everyone grieving his loss.  When we got the news of Roel’s unexpected and sudden passing I was in shock & in disbelief as everyone else.  All the memories we shared together while working at the District Court came flashing before me.  Almost 24 years of working along side him every department (Record, Docketing, Relief DJ CRD & CM/ECF Dev).  He had started with the court 2 weeks before I did.  We often joked that I was following him and wanted to be just like him. Most days it was a pleasure to work with him.  There were days we’d both get on each other’s nerves and needed to take a break for each other, but we always made up joking and teasing each other.  We learned so much from each other.  We would talk about everything and anything.  Work, health issues, family, goals and dreams. His dream was to one day win the lottery.  I would tell him you better not leave me behind.  He’d say laughing nah I got your back I’ll hook you up. He knew I loved trucks and have always wanted one, so he’d tell me I’ll buy you your truck in Dodger Blue because he knew they’re my favorite team and color.  We’d text each other when the Dodgers, LA Rams were playing. He’d either be teasing me about them choking during a winning game or cheering along with me.   He was also a man of faith and family guy. He loved his wife & daughter and always talked about them.  Our last text with each other was for his birthday.  I texted to wish him a Happy Birthday and hoped he was having a good day.  He responded that he was having a blast with all his family.  You’re missed my friend Row L (a joke we had on how to pronounce his name) 

One of my first memories I had with Roel was when he and my sister were dating. They were still working together at McDonald's and they took me out on my birthday. They treated me out for bowling at Chatto on Vermont and dinner in Chinatown afterwards. 

When my sister and Roel got married I was happy because I have another brother in the family. Back when we lived in Los Feliz, Ate and Roel would always get Tapsilog from Good-Ha! We have shared plenty of good memories and good times. I am grateful for the time we had. I am grateful for having you as my brother in law, a husband to my sister, and father to my niece. I miss you and love you always. Thank you, Roel. 

My name is Eddie Alvarez, I work in IT at the court, I knew Roel since I started, 20 something years ago, he was always courteous, friendly, funny, and professional, I really liked Roel, he called me "El Jefe", or (Compa), we always joked around when we ran into each other or when we spoke on the phone, when I heard the very unfortunate and sad news , I broke down and cried, he was so young and full of life, God bless your soul Roel, you were part of our court family and we will miss you very much, god bless Jefe :)

I send heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers who are grieving the loss of Roel.  In the short time I worked with him I knew him to be a humble, intelligent, selfless man who took opportunities to share laughter and kindness with everyone around him.  He will be greatly missed! My deepest sympathy for your loss of Roel. I was his AO supervisor with the National Service Desk for that past year. He was a great addition to our team. His energy and personality were a great fit with our team and the way we were spread-out across the US. Roel fit right in and jumped right in to provide his area expertise helping our Court community. He possessed a wealth of knowledge in civil and criminal cases. I had the honor and privilege of working with and eventually supervising Roel during our many years together at the court in Los Angeles before moving to Maryland in 2015. Roel was kind, caring, and a consummate professional. That, combined with always knowing the best places to eat, is why I recruited him to join the CM/ECF Team where he continued to excel, contributed greatly to our successes, and introduced us to one amazing restaurant after another during our monthly Team luncheons. Roel was always such a joy to spend time with and although I was much older than him, we were both fathers of daughters, so even more so than his commitment to our team and his work at the court, I respected and appreciated his unconditional dedication to his family. I had no idea when we spoke in February it would be the last opportunity I would ever have to do so. I have no words to express the impact of his unexpected passing, so I will quote Maya Angelou - A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again. Roel was indeed a great soul, and it is my hope that his memory will continue to bring you together. Please accept my condolences. – Joe James

Roel became my colleague and friend, while working together at NSD.  He was a family man and caring soul who always had time to help or could offer a word or encouragement or guidance.  We miss you my friend.

I started working with Roel this past year, when he started on my team at the NSD. From the get go, I realized how smart, knowledgeable and humble he was. He was always there to help anyone and everyone, especially me. I can't imagine what the family is going through because I still wish this was a dream. We lost a good man and soul. We had many conversations about family and the future. My last conversation with him, I was congratulating him and teasing him about how his daughter was graduating high school and I was celebrating my daughter’s graduation from elementary school. We both just laughed. All my prayers and condolences to your family. I've always believed in Proverbs 3: 5,6 but this hurts because I will miss my friend.

Roel and I were colleagues at the NSD. We have only worked together this past year but we talked often. He was my 'go-to' when I needed help with work. It didn't matter how busy he was on any day, he always made a point to help, even if it meant giving up his break. He was a funny guy and just so kind.... and one of the most humble people I'd ever known. Every time he would help me resolve an issue I would tell him how smart and genius he was and he would always come back and say "Just don't tell anyone my secrets!" and he would laugh. His passing was a shock. He was definitely loved by many and  a true loss for the world that didn't get to know him yet. I pray for your family and anyone grieving the loss of our friend, Roel.

I met Roel in 1999 at the District court. It was a great experience knowing and working with Roel.  One memory that I will never forget, it was 5pm after work and I was on my way home. I put on my sun glasses, ear phones and started walking, all of the sudden I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Roel , he basically told me to take my ear phones out , stay alert while walking towards Union station. I agreed, we laughed talked about work. He was a great person who was easy to get along with and very caring. I miss him. God bless his family.

Roel and I were best friends. We met each other at the District Court back in 2008. At that time, he had about 10 years already with the Court. We hit it off right away. We started hanging out. We became really good friends. We invited each other in birthdays, lunches, etc. Our families would have dinners. We treated each other like brothers. Confiding in each other about issues, problems, advice, etc.  He was more than a friend to me, he was my brother, he became part of my family.  When my youngest son was born, I knew that Roel would be a perfect Godfather to him.  When I told Roel that I wanted him to be Noah's Godfather, he thought I was joking. I said I was serious. We are officially family I told him. He took the role seriously. I will miss him dearly.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.  

I worked with Roel on the National Service Desk for that past year.  I am from the bankruptcy court side at California Central District and so Roel was my District Court counterpart.  We had worked in the same building in Los Angeles for many years but had never met and so we got to know each other while working for the NSD.  He possessed a wealth of knowledge and would help me with troubleshooting civil and criminal case issues and I would assist him on bankruptcy case issues. I have no words for Roel's unexpected sudden passing other than my heartfelt condolences for the family -- Robin Beacham
