Miekka Maureen (Reeder) Cox, 56, passed away on August 1, 2023 at her home in Nashville, Tennessee. Miekka was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Jack and Mary Reeder on September 16, 1966, but she called Indiana “home” for many years before relocating to Nashville in recent years. Miekka was a graduate of Castle High School and continued her studies at Western Kentucky University (WKU) and later, the University of Southern Indiana (USI). She spent much of her life in southern Indiana raising her four children before returning to the workforce. Many people may remember Miekka from her cherished time as secretary at Haubstadt Community School (HCS), where she was known to greet students with a smile each morning. Following her time at HCS, Miekka became the Executive Assistant to the President at USI where she took a great deal of pride in her work. Miekka was an active member of her Nashville community and had an immense passion for giving to others. In recent years, she volunteered with the non-profit Hands on Nashville to support those experiencing homelessness, as well as to volunteer with various disaster relief efforts. In addition, Miekka was incredibly proud to be a member of Nashville’s COVID-19 Strike Team, where she worked with the Metro Public Health Department to provide vaccines to underserved communities in Davidson county. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking for those she loved, being an active participant in local politics, exploring Nashville’s cultural scene, and spending time with her beloved rescue cat, Loretta. Miekka is remembered for her unmatched sense of humor and her exceptionally kind heart. Miekka was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Reeder Carter and Jack Reeder; step-father, Robert (Bob) Carter; cousin, Dennis Midgorden; and dear friend, Burkley (Burk) McCarthy, Jr. She is survived by her children, Anthony (Jake) Cox (Emily), Abigail Wells (Samuel), Natalie Cox, Mariel Cox; sisters, Kristen Tucker (Todd), Tiffany Jordan (Kevin); step-mother, Gayle Carter; uncle, Nelson Douglas (Doug) Midgorden (Madeline); cousin, Kellie Midgorden; nephews, Matthew Jordan, Maxwell Tucker, Jackson Tucker; and niece, Jennifer Dodds (Chris). Services will be held at Alexander Funeral Home in Newburgh, Indiana, on Friday, August 11, 2023. A memorial will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 PM CST with a celebration of life following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Nine Lives Nashville, 2211 Stratford Ave., Nashville, TN 37216-3420.
