Born: August 30, 1936. Departed: December 14, 2021. Tom was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary Purcell. He grew up on the Upper West Side with his three siblings: Mary, Frances, and John. Tom attended All Hallows High School and graduated from St. John’s University in 1960 with a degree in Law. He was admitted to the New York State Bar the same year. Tom spent his professional career in both public and private practice. He held positions with Exxon and NYC Economic Development. He also served as the Deputy Public Administrator for New York County, as well as running his private practice.
Tom was elected to the New York Athletic Club in 1958 and maintained his membership through the rest of his life. Within the Club he was associated with a variety of groups. While not known for his athletic prowess, he was a fierce competitor. He won the Club Championship in Gin Rummy and Backgammon several times. When his children were old enough, Tom focused this same energy on youth sports, particularly the Saturday Morning Program and Junior Fencing. This, combined with his activity on the Law Committee, led to his election to the NYAC Board of Governors in 1997. In that role, he chaired several committees, including the Law Committee, through 2001.
Tom was also involved in numerous other organizations around New York City. Two of his favorites were Intercity Scholarship Fund and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Tom is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan, and their two children, Brian and Caroline.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Tom’s name to the Intercity Scholarship Fund, 1011 First Ave, Suite 1800, New York NY, 10022. Tom actively supported this organization for the last three decades of his life.
