Recently, I learned that my cousin, Richard A Oberfield, MD had died 9/14/23 unexpectedly from a devastating neurologic infection. My name is also Richard A Oberfield, MD and I am a retired medical oncologist.
My great grand father was an Uncle to Richard's grandfather, his nephew from Russia.
I am presently 91 yrs old and once did see Richard with many family members and brother Bill, a medical student at Harvard. Richard was a college student at that time. Over the years, when I visited NYC or Hanover, NH I was often mistaken for him having the same name. I had corresponded with his wife  Sharon,twice,   an endocrinologist at Columbia medical center in the past. I never knew I had such cousins when I lived in NYC and unfortunately never met him again or his wife.
It is with deep regret having learned about his death, and how difficult it must be for the family at this time. From the articles he published as a pediatric psychiatrist, he accomplished very much. According to his family, colleagues, and friends, he was a very special person who helped so many people in his life. I hope that time will make the appropriate adjustments to absorb his loss at this time. He will always be remembered for what he did for a everyone, and hopefully that will help somewhat in reducing the sadness of his  absence at this time.

Dr. Oberfield was my psychiatrist for 20 years. He helped me to steady the ship from the time that I was eight years old. After many, many doctors, and many conversations, my family and I knew then that Dr. O. was going to be the one. After two decades, I have no reservations that this was the right choice. Dr. O. was one of the people who made my success in life possible. He was kind, compassionate, and wise. Hearing of his passing has been a loss for all of us, and so I offer deep condolences to his family and to all of those whose lives he touched professionally. I am eternally grateful for his wisdom and his support.

Our family met Dr. Richard Oberfield, whom we affectionately called Dr. O, 23 years ago. 
With his wisdom and guidance Dr. O helped us navigate parenting and relationships in a way that made us feel heard and respected. 
We are heartbroken to learn of his passing, and want you - his family - to know that he touched each one of us in the most dramatic and healing manner.
From parenting a seven year old through the teenage years and beyond, to the various challenging chapters in our own lives, to referring our daughter-in-law to a doctor who could address her postpartum depression when her own medical team was unable to help.

Firstly, my deepest condolences to a family with all of the latest arrivals that he would proudly and fondly talk about.

Richard was my first boss at Bellevue and a friend as we both moved into different worlds, though we came together to frequently visit one of our mentors Paul Gabriel in his final years.

Richard’s dry humor will remain in my memory as much as his clinical acumen.

This is a small token of love for a man who seriously nearly ran me over one morning on Park Avenue then stating he had just had the car serviced!
NY drivers and NY psychiatrists, a rare breed!

Mrs. Oberfield and Family,
I was devasted to hear about Dr Oberfield's passing. Dr Oberfield was one of my supervisors 25 years ago when I was a psychiatric resident at NYU. He was such a kind, compassionate person and I learned so much from him both personally and professionally.

Dr Oberfield trained multiple generations of doctors in NYC. And in your time of sorrow, please know that we all carry a little piece of him forward.

Rich was a wonderful, kind and thoughtful man. We will miss him so very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and the kids.
