It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the sudden passing of Peter R. Holt who left us peacefully Monday morning at the age of 93. Peter was a force of nature in every respect: Chief of Gastroenterology for 39 years at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital (Mount Sinai West) and researcher at Rockefeller University, author, world traveler, mentor to hundreds of physicians, and most importantly beloved husband of 45 years to Joyce Weil, father to Shawn (Jocelyn), Tamara, and Rachel (Michael Needham), Grandfather to Kinneret, Yardena, Ezra, Leah, Alana and Jordan, and brother-in-law to Simon Weil.
Peter was born in Berlin on September 8th, 1930. He always shared that his first memory was on November the 10th, 1938 walking with his mother to get a visa to go to England, and feeling the shattered glass under his feet the morning after Kristallnacht. His family escaped Nazi Germany and eventually settled in London. Thanks to free graduate education, he attended the London Hospital Medical College of the University of London, graduating with Honors. He moved to the United States to complete his residency at Columbia University and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was recruited by the Department of Medicine at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City to create an academic Department of Gastroenterology. Peter stayed as Chief of Gastroenterology for 39 years, training hundreds of physicians. He moved to Rockefeller University as a Senior Research Associate through 2020 before spending the COVID-19 pandemic writing a-soon-to-be published book on celiac disease.
Peter had the ultimate curious mind and his thirst for learning could not be quenched. He loved to read and to travel, taking trips to Kenya, Malta, and Cuba in his 90s, to go to the Metropolitan Opera, to explore the far-reaching museums of New York City, and to spend time with his friends and family at his home in Putnam County. Peter’s energy, passion, focus and love will be missed by all.
A service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel (180 West 76th) on Thursday March 21st at 2:30 pm, and the family will welcome visitors at home on Thursday between 5 and 7pm, and Friday between 4 and 6pm.
