Neal H. Steigbigel, MD, 89, distinguished Infectious Disease Specialist for 63 years, brother of Dr. Roy Steigbigel, MD, father of Matthew and Amy Steigbigel, Father-in-law to Jennifer Buesser, grandfather to Nathaniel and Anya Steigbigel, ex husband and best friend to Ellen Jarvis Steigbigel and life partner to Marian Unterman. Dr. Steigbigel’s work had a profound impact on the field of infectious diseases, innumerable colleagues, medical students and patients.
He graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1956 and cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1960. His key career posts included: Staff Physician in Infectious Diseases at NY VA Medical Center and NYU School of Medicine; Visiting Professor of Medicine, at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Director of Fellowship Training in Infectious Diseases and Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center; Founder and Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Professor of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also served on the Editorial Board and was Contributing Editor for The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics from 1976-present.
