Martin P. Murphy

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on January 7, 2018 of Martin Philip Murphy after a valiant two-year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Burke Murphy, his daughter Bridget Murphy Morgan and her husband Joseph, son, Martin Patrick Murphy and his wife Anne. Martin and his wife had four grandchildren: Erin Lily Morgan, Riley Rose Morgan, Colm Martin Morgan and Abigail Rose Murphy. He is also survived by his brother Gerard, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Martin was born and raised in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. He was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Murphy (McCreesh). He emigrated to the United States on August 19, 1977 and married his wife Mary on September 24, 1977. Martin and Mary made many trips over the years back to his birthplace where they proudly introduced their daughter and son to their Irish aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as their Irish Australian uncle, aunt and cousins. There they embedded in their children a love of all things Irish.

Martin retired from Bellevue Hospital in January 2015. He was their Locksmith Supervisor and worked there for over 27 years. He was one of the founding members of the Institutional Locksmith Association. Martin was a talented musician who played the banjo and guitar. When he was 18 he played with “The Roving Trio” with his sister, Philomena, and her husband Brian. They played their traditional Irish Folk Music at the Manchester Folk Festival in England, and played at several venues in Ireland. Martin was an avid reader, football fan, and enjoyed cooking. He was a friend to many and gave joy to his friends and family with his enthusiasm for life. Martin inspired his daughter and son to run in the NYC Marathon for Fred’s Team for cancer research. He will be deeply missed.

Martin will be laid to rest next to his daughter, brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and father-in-law at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.
