Lois was a 47-year resident of Indianapolis, Indiana where she moved in 1966 with her husband, the late Travis Bennett, and her two children. She moved to New York City in 2013 to be closer to her daughter, Deborah Ann Bennett, and Deborah’s family. She was born in Colfax, Iowa and was raised primarily in Pueblo, Colorado.
Lois most wanted to be remembered as someone who cared about other people. This desire led her to a profession in nursing; upon earning her degree she was voted to be the person her classmates would most want to be their own nurse. After taking some time off when her children were young, Lois worked as an operating room nurse, most recently at Community Hospital in Indianapolis.
Over the years, Lois volunteered for many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Planned Parenthood, and her church. She also supported her political party by working on various volunteer jobs including poll worker and voter registrar. She loved music and was a passionate football fan.
After retirement, Lois travelled the world with Travis, venturing to such diverse countries as China, Hong Kong, Russia, India, Argentina, Europe, Egypt, Israel and Jordan. As a widow, she traveled solo to Turkey and South Africa.
Lois is survived by her daughter Deborah Ann Bennett, son-in-law David Dempsey, and granddaughter Trina Dempsey of New York City, daughter-in-law Valerie Pryor of Dublin, California, and several nieces and nephews residing in Texas, Colorado, and the Philippines. She was preceded in death by her husband Travis, son Rod Bennett, brother Max Miller, and sister Jane Nelson.
A celebration of Lois’ life will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home in New York City on Saturday, November 9 at 11 AM. Family and Friends will begin sharing memories at 11:30 AM and will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person. The family will be hosting a light luncheon at Frank E. Campbell after the celebration.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Lois’ honor either to The New Jewish Home – Manhattan (jewishhome.org), which provided loving care to Lois over the last few years, or to the Rod Bennett Memorial Scholarship Fund (https://charitysmith.org/memorial-funds/rod-bennett-memorial-scholarship-fund/).
