True genius brain power the world will feel impact forever!

Jim was a classmate at the Lawrence Elementary School in Brookline MA. We graduated in 1951 from the eighth grade. I never knew of his many accomplishments until our Lawrence School reunion about 20 years ago.
I did send him an email each year to congratulate his Forbes List Level.

I met Jim as a young boy through my mothers employment with him.  He was kind enough to allow me to fly on his plane many times over the years.  He would always make the time to speak to me, often asking how my studies were going in school,  and then how my career was going in real estate.  I'll always remember him for his kindness and generosity, he truly was a very special man.

Dear Simons Family and Friends-

Among the many apt and poignant words shared at the service for Jim was the below from Jim's cousin, Richard Lourie.

That so many disparate and exceptional qualifies could coexist in harmony in one person distinguised Jim and made him who he was, and Rich captured this beautifully.

At the request of Rich, I am sharing these words here.  May this bring comfort to all of us who miss Jim so dearly, and alow us to carry this microscosm of Jim- and his big heart- with us always.

JIM’S LAST PROOF

Outdoing all in fortune and misfortune,
He gave his greatest measure of respect
To those achievements of the intellect
Marked by the strict grace and fine proportion
Which mathematicians call elegance.
And the line between confidence and arrogance
Was one he sought to never cross
In each day’s war of gain and loss.
Even at the end when he was stripped bare
Of the power to remember, speak and freely move
And it cost him pain to breathe the air,
Jim still had one last theorem left to prove:
That there is no sense in all our science and our art
Unless they be enlivened by a loving heart.

I had the honor, the privilege and the joy of working for Jim for almost 20 years.  There wasn't a day spent around him that we didn't somehow manage to share a laugh.  I have said many times over the years that he had done more for me in a day than my own father had done in a lifetime.  Even after I had to leave my job 2 years ago because of health issues and covid, we stayed in touch and he always continued to offer help if I was ever in need.  I no for certain that that wasn't exclusive to me, it's just the kind of person he was.  My sincerest heartfelt condolences to everyone in his beautiful family, it was a joy and privilege to spend time with them as well over the years - love to you all.  To you, Jim, all my love and thanks for "the ride", you will always mean the world to me.. xoxo Trish

I would like to offer my condolences. Growing up in a developing country his career influenced me staying true to what I dearly enjoyed - maths. He truly is inspiring.

I only met Dr. Simons once in the mid seventies when he was SUNY Stony Brook math chairman and when I was a student in his department.  His keen intelligence and clarity of vision truly 
impressed me.
The world has lost a truly great intellect and humanitarian. My condolences to his family and close friends.

Jim was the person I have looked up to my entire life. The entire reason that I got started in this industry was because of him. He will be seriously missed.

Jim Simons was a great friend to mathematics over the years.  Like many other researchers,  I am grateful to have enjoyed the support of  a Simons Fellowship, and proud of the accomplishments which it enabled me to achieve. I was also lucky enough to have the opportunity to share dinner with Jim and Marilyn at one of the many fundraisers they hosted for what is now the Simons / Laufer Institute, but was then the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkely.   He was a Renaissance man and a great champion for the  global mathematics community.  He will be sorely missed.

I went to grammar school with Jim and my parents were best friends with his grandparents,Pauline and Peter Kanter. Midge Guterman Dembitzer now of Manhattan.

When I was going though a difficult time because of an broken femur Mr Simons helped me out with a small loan. I will never forget his kindness.

So sorry for your loss. He was a man who made a difference in the world.
