Bernard Zucker (83), an intellectual property attorney and executive, died on July 13th, 2024. He was born in New York City to Nathan and Pearl Zucker. He attended University of Pennsylvania, where he studied history, and went on to Cornell Law, where he received a JD and an MBA. He practiced intellectual property law, joining Western Electric/AT&T in 1978. AT&T spun off Lucent Technologies, and then merged with Alcatel, which later was acquired by Nokia. His roles included Vice President of the Intellectual Property Business, and General Counsel of Bell Labs. He retired in 2017 after more than 39 years at the company through its changing identities.
Soft-spoken and thoughtful, when Bernie spoke, people listened. He was noted at work for his supportive mentoring, especially of young women lawyers.
Bernie loved basketball, and played in pickup basketball games regularly through his early sixties (often keeping pace with players 30-plus years his junior). He was a long-time New York Knicks season ticket holder. Bernie enjoyed spending time at his homes in East Hampton, New York and Delray Beach, Florida–even though he never really liked going to the beach.
Bernie is survived by Cynthia, his wife of 49 years, his daughter Amy Bruckman, son-in-law Peter Weimann, grandsons Noah and Evan Weimann, sister Elaine Wax, and nephew Mark Stein. He was a loving father to Amy and adoring grandfather to Noah and Evan. Bernie and Cynthia were the perfect couple, and what made Bernie happiest was anything that made Cynthia happy.
