A native of Poland, and long resident of New Orleans, Louisiana Slawek was born on February 9, 1953 to the late Josefa and Stanislaw Kwasik. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Hanna Kwasik, son Arthur, sister Miroslawa Laskowska and many family members in Poland and friends around the world.
Slawek earned his Ph.D in 1980 at the University of Gdansk (Poland). He began his academic career in Germany, France, Indiana and Oklahoma. In June 1988, he joined Tulane University, where he was a professor of Mathematics for the last 32 years. He retired in January, 2021. His research interest was in algebraic and geometric topology. In addition to his passion for mathematics he enjoyed, teaching, inspiring and mentoring students.
Slawek will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his wisdom, catholic faith, kindness, fairness, modesty, generosity, compassion towards others and great sense of humor.
The family would like to thank Tulane Medical Center and Lakeside Hospice services for the care and kindness they provided. Special thanks also to his friends for their loving attention and support.
The funeral service will be at Holy Name of Jesus Church, St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118 on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 12:00pm, with visitation beginning at 11:00am.
The interment will be private.
