To Dr. Houpy's family, I pray that God wraps your hearts in his divine comfort and grace in this bereavement.

Although, I just knew Dr Houpy in the latter stage of his career, I have great respect for his knowledge of math and teaching methods. I will forever appreciate him as a coworker, department head and being on the committee that hired me at Ben Franklin. He will certainly be missed.

Dr. Houpy was one of the best teachers at Benjamin Franklin High School.  I was lucky enough to have him as my Calculus AP teacher in 1990-1991.  He made a very difficult subject easy to understand.  He did so with such a calm, measured reserve.  He was patient and kind and would speak with such clarity, ensuring we understood the concepts.  Sometimes I would get excited about attaining a new concept and Dr. Houpy would let me go to the chalk board to re-explain the concept to others, partly because I was a ham, but also because he was encouraging me to fly.  Despite his class being right before lunch, Dr. Houpy kept the energy up right until the bell rang.  I went on to do really well on the AP exam and this allowed me to advance through 2 semesters of Calculus requirements at Northwestern University, which later would factor into my early graduation from Northwestern.  I credit Dr. Houpy for instilling this enthusiasm for advanced math, which I use today in my career as a software engineer and my hobbyist interest in Quantum Computing.  It was you, Dr. Houpy, who introduced me to Integrals and Imaginary Numbers, but also mathematical intuition, and for this, I am forever grateful.  Thank you, kind sir.  And now it is your turn to learn all of the mysteries of the Universe from up on high.

Dr. Houpy was a lovely and caring teacher who made all of his students feel worthwhile.  His class remains one of my fondest memories from Ben Franklin.  My deepest condolences to his family.

Dr Houpy was the best trigonometry and calculus teacher!  He was very patient and had a knack for making math extremely intelligible. 

I graduated in 1989 but have always felt that he was both a teacher who cared and made a great difference.  Ben Franklin remains the best nurturing and teaching experience of my life.

Dear Houpy Family, 
Dr Houpy taught me Trig at Ben Franklin from 1991-92. He was not only an incredible teacher, but his kind, gentle demeanor meant the world to me. He made math seem less intimidating and it's one of the few classes where I retained enough knowledge (after so many years!) to help my own high school kids with their own trig class. When I reminisce on my senior year at BFHS, my thoughts automatically go to his class and how much I enjoyed it, in large part to the kind of teacher he was.

Mr. Houpy was my Algebra 2 teacher at Ben Franklin and he was the kindest, most patient, most tolerant human and an excellent teacher to boot!  We LOVED his yellow tie and we all just thought the world of him - though I am certain we were huge pains in the rear.  He took it with good stride.  What a wonderful teacher and human! Dr. Houpy taught me AP Calculus at Ben Franklin and I only have fond memories of him. He was a brilliant mathematician, caring teacher and all around outstanding person. May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family.

Dr. Houpy was the best math teacher that I ever had! I had him my senior year at BFHS, and it was the first time that I felt I could really be successful with math. I remember him fondly and often, as I now work with high school math students. 

I am very saddened to hear of his loss.

Deep condolences to the family. Dr. Houpy was a wonderful teacher who taught me calculus 30 years ago.  He got me started on a path to college and grad school in engineering.  He did the same to so many others during a long teaching career.

Our sincerest sympathy on the passing of Mr. Raymond.  He was a kind and gentle soul and will be greatly missed.  I'll miss telling him hello and chatting when I saw him out getting the mail, newspaper etc.  You are in our daily prayers.  We are here for you if you need anything at all.
