Dr. Paul Bennett Lansing, II, a resident of New Orleans for over 60 years, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, April 11, 2024 of apparent heart failure at his home on Saint Charles Ave. Paul B. Lansing was born in Metairie, Louisiana on July 21, 1935 to Paul Bennett Lansing and Elizabeth Cather Lansing. At the age of 7, the family moved to Webster Groves, Missouri, where his father was promoted to Terminal Manager with Mississippi Valley Barge Line operating up and down on the Mississippi River. Paul went to school in Webster Groves until going off to college. Paul was appointed to an NROTC scholarship at Georgia Tech University in Mechanical Engineering graduating in 1958. He served for three years as an engineering officer in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer USS Rupertus. He served in the Navy reserves, rising to Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Corp and leaving service in 1972.
While in the Navy, Paul’s interests changed and he decided to pursue medical training, eventually becoming a general surgeon. He attended the University of Missouri for one year prior to being accepted to Tulane Medical School. He did his one-year residency in Monroe, Louisiana, then another year at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, where he remained to begin his practice. He began his practice with Dr. McQuitty’s, eventually buying out the practice upon that doctor’s retirement. He set up his own practice as a general surgeon, operating in all the New Orleans hospitals. Nurses reported that he was a strict disciplinarian in the operating room without much humor. He had a very biting, funny humor otherwise.
In 1964, Paul met his future wife, Julianne Perlt, who was visiting from her home in St. Paul, Minnesota. Marrying in 1965, they had two sons, Trent and Gerrit. At age 79, in 2014, Paul was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which created enough disabilities that he decided to retire that year. His mind remained alert even though walking became more difficult.
The Lansings lived in their house on Milan St. for over 40 years before finally settling in a condominium on Saint Charles Ave. for the remainder of Paul’s life.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Harry Lansing. He leaves behind his wife, Julianne Lansing, his sons, Trent Palmer Lansing (former wife Elaine Lansing) and Gerrit Perlt Lansing, and a brother, James Lansing.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1545 State Street in New Orleans, on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 1:30PM. A ceremony by the Navy Honor Guard will commence at 2:30 PM, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM.
The family wishes to thank Paul’s caregivers for their contribution to his wellbeing during his final years: Yvette Garner, Rose Jones, Lyndon Ross, Charlotte St. Cyr, Crystal Townsend, and special thanks to Phalon Cornist.
