On Monday, June 10, 2013, Marion Spindel Yokum passed away at the age of 91. She was born April 11, 1922 to Edward R. Spindel and Lillian Schmidt Spindel and was a lifetime resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Edward L. Yokum, Sr. , and siblings Edward R. Spindel Jr. (Mildred), Ethel Valenti (Frank), Earl Spindel (Enola), Lloyd Spindel (Mary), Howard Spindel and Anthony Spindel. Survived by children Dianne Yokum Miller (Don), Edward L. Yokum Jr. (Judi), Mitchell A. Yokum and Brian A. Yokum (Susan). Grandchildren Melinda Miller, Alison Miller McCraw (Jon), Jeffrey Yokum (Stacie), Dr. Michael Yokum (Kelley), David Yokum J.D. (fiancée Sara Gillam), Karen Yokum, Ellen Yokum, Kevin Yokum and Logan Yokum. Great grandchildren Austin, Lauren, Andrew, William, Abigail, and Charles Yokum, and numerous nieces and nephews.
During World War II, while her husband was in combat in the United States Army, she worked in the war effort on the home front at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft on the lakefront of New Orleans as a milling machine operator building United States Navy PBY “Flying Boat” aircraft. She was a parishioner of Saint Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Algiers, and a member of the SAGES senior citizen organization and American Legion Gentilly Woods Post 358 Ladies Auxiliary.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans from 6 pm to 9 pm. Visitation will resume Friday, June 14, 2013, at St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 3101 Eton Street, New Orleans (Algiers) La., from 8:30 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am, Father John Talamo presiding. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Canal Blvd., New Orleans. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
