John M. Nunez

John M. Nunez, Sr. passed peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020 in Metairie, Louisiana. John was born August 17, 1937 in New Orleans to Harry and Yvonne “Mina” Nunez.

He attended Holy Cross for grammar school and high school. He went on to Tulane University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and mathematics and remained a lifelong fan of his alma mater. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. John began his career as a welding engineer at Michoud Space Center. He went on to open an accounting and bookkeeping firm, General Business Services, where he worked for thirty years until his retirement. In his spare time, John was a volunteer football coach at Girard Playground.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine Bellanger Nunez; his sons, John Nunez, Jr., Jay (Melanie), and Jeffrey (Courtney); grandchildren, Jeremy, Cory, Brady, Cooper, and Kate; brother, Harry (Sharon); and sister, Alma (the late Walter); as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry, Sr. and Yvonne Nunez; sisters, Joy Nunez and Yvonne Nunez Lemoine; aunt, Mercedes “Nanny” Nunez; and grandson, Cody Nunez.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Jayne Gurtler and staff for six years of care in the treatment of John’s melanoma; as well as Hospice Associates and his nurses, Katie and Andria.

Please join us in celebrating John’s life on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans. There will be a memorial gathering in the funeral home beginning at 10 AM followed by a graveside service in Metairie Cemetery at 12 PM.
