James J. Hand, 86 and affectionately referred to as “Bubba”, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on September 27. He lived a rich and beautiful life filled with love. He was a man of faith and generosity. He loved watching the Saints, reading his newspaper, and spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Theresa Hand; his beloved son, Michael J. Hand, Sr.; brothers, Ronald Hand and Thomas Hand, Sr.; in-laws, Ronald Hoefeld, Ed Suffern, and Danny Matte;
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lynne Roe Hand; his children, Kevin Hand, Erin Hand, and daughter-in-law, Catherine Hand; his grandchildren Michael (Analiese), Patrick (Sarah), Caitlin (Boyd), and Matthew; his two great-granddaughters, Aubrey and Harper; his siblings, Theresa Hoefeld, Terrance Hand (Ursula), Mary Hand, and Patty Suffern; sisters-in-law, Jo Hand and Melissa Hand. Jimmy is the brother-in-law of William and Rose Roe. He is also survived by numerous, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a named director of the CPA firm LaPorte, Sehrt, Romig, and Hand, while also being an active member of many professional organizations. He was also a member and Retreat Captain of Group 38 at Manresa Retreat House and served on the Finance Committee. He was the Treasurer of the Touchdown Club of New Orleans for many years, served as an usher at St. Angela Merici, and a volunteer at East Jefferson Hospital and East Jefferson Hospital Foundation, as well as donating his time at New Heights Therapy Center.
Bubba’s vibrant and generous soul will be forever cherished by those lucky enough to know and love him. He unknowingly touched the lives of many, being a beacon of compassion and kindness. Bubba was pure light and joy, and his top priority was making sure his family was always safe and loved.
Bubba was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be immensely missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.
There will be a visitation at Saint Angela Merici Church ,901 Beverly Gardens Drive Metairie, LA, 70002, on October 3, 2023 beginning at 11:00 AM until the funeral mass at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at All Saint Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Manresa Retreat House P.O. Box 89 Convent Louisiana 70723 Attn: Shellie Hayes.
